Cool Exteriors: A New Frontier in Efficient and Resilient Buildings

Highly solar-reflective “cool” roofs have long been embraced in many U.S. cities and states to reduce cooling energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and the impacts of the urban heat island effect. However, the exterior walls of a building also play an important role in protecting residents from the elements—including extreme heat. In this session, the Cool Roof Rating Council, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will share about cool exterior walls: what they are, how they work, and how your customers can benefit from their use. The session will also cover codes, standards, and programs that promote the use of cool exteriors; third-party ratings that assist with comparing and selecting products; and answers to home and building owners’ frequently asked questions.

While cool exteriors have the most profound benefits in warmer climates (like here in sunny Las Vegas!), they can be beneficial in a wide variety of climates, especially as summers are getting hotter. By attending this session, commercial and residential contractors from across the U.S. and the globe will learn valuable takeaways about technologies that are already at their fingertips to help customers cut cooling energy costs and build resilience to extreme heat.
