Renoworks Pro helps contractors present design options and pricing in one seamless experience.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Karen Edwards spoke with Jenni McMorran of Renoworks to discuss how Renoworks Pro’s Instant Estimator is helping contractors present designs and pricing together to streamline the sales process and improve closing rates.

Within the platform, contractors can generate a design report that showcases multiple product and color options alongside pricing tiers. “In the visualizer, it has a design report which allows the contractor to create different versions of that design,” Jenni explained. “Within that design report, they can now have a design with a ‘good’ price, a design with a ‘better’ price and a design with the ‘best’ price.” The report can be emailed, printed or shared digitally, allowing for quick and easy proposals.

Alongside the convenience and flexibility these reports offer, accuracy has been a key focus in the design of the tool. Powered by Eagleview data, the tool delivers measurements that Jenni said are highly reliable. “From our internal testing, we found it’s no more than 3 to 5% off, so around 95% accurate,” she said, noting contractors can also pull a more detailed measurement report within the platform if needed.

Designed to integrate into any contractor’s existing workflow, the instant estimate is generated in less than a minute, helping contractors close deals in one call. “You can show the design, talk through the materials and give that price all in that same visit,” Jenni said. For contractors that use a two-call close, the instant estimator can help build trust and confidence. “It can help set expectations early, so instead of the homeowner sitting in suspense, they get a realistic sense of what things might cost. That way, the final quote isn't a shock. It's a continuation of that conversation.”

Looking ahead, Renoworks plans to expand its reach beyond the roof. “We’re working on expanding the feature to cover the entire exterior of the home,” Jenni shared. “Our goal is to give contractors a way to price out the full renovation project in real time while they’re sitting with the homeowner.”

Homeowners increasingly expect to preview renovations before committing to major investments.

In a recent Roofing Road Trips® episode, Karen Edwards spoke with Jenni McMorran, contractor channel partner manager of Renoworks, to discuss how visualization software like theirs takes the newest technology and transforms the roofing sales process. As homeowners demand more clarity before committing to major renovations, contractors are turning to digital tools to bring their designs to life.

“Visualization software allows you to see what the completed renovation will look like before you get started,” Jenni explained. “You can put in a photo of the actual property and see what new roofing materials, new siding, windows, colors, painting colors, all of that from real world manufacturers and see how that will look before you do the work.”

Because roofing is a significant investment, helping homeowners feel confident in their product and design choices is essential to establishing trust and closing the deal. And, with the rapid growth of technological advancements over the past few years, homeowners’ standards have risen, too. “Over the last few years, homeowners don't just want to be told what their new roof or exterior will look like anymore; they expect to see it,” Jenni stated. “Between Pinterest, Instagram, HGTV, online design tools, people now come into the buying process with the very visual mindset, and they're used to previewing things before they commit.”

What was once considered a “nice to have” is now a competitive advantage for contractors. “Contractors who use visualizers immediately stand out as being more professional, more cutting edge, like they're on top of what's the new technology,” Jenni said. “Visualizers genuinely support the sales process, help contractors stand out, build trust faster and communicate ideas much more clearly with homeowners. And with AI improving image quality and realism, the bar for what homeowners expect to see is rising even faster.”

The new Renoworks feature enhances designs using AI, helping contractors win more jobs.

The AI revolution is here, and Renoworks’ newest tool is giving homeowners and contactors a reason to jump in. Image Enhance takes basic renderings and transforms them to look like realistic photos. This update builds on Renoworks’ existing platform that helps contractors and designers present exterior renovation concepts to homeowners with clarity and confidence.

How it works

Renoworks has a simple three-step process that turns original images into photo-realistic finishes:

1 – Upload an image/rendering of the home directly to the Renoworks project page. You don’t need to download any additional software or export any files; everything happens in one place.

2 – Design the project by applying real products from over 350 manufacturer libraries. Try as many products as you’d like; changing products is easy and intuitive.

3 – Enhance! Click the magic wand and in five seconds, AI Image Enhance will improve the lighting, shadows and depth while maintaining product color accuracy.

Close more deals

Contractors who adopt the tool can expect stronger homeowner responses and more closed deals. By enhancing the realism of exterior design previews, AI Image Enhance helps “get homeowners to say ‘yes’ faster,” according to Renoworks’ product description. Standard renderings can illustrate a design concept, but the enhanced images look more like finished work, helping homeowners picture the real outcome. The refined visuals can elevate a contractor’s pitch and set them apart from competitors using traditional mockups.

Today, homeowners have more tools and information to make empowered decisions about their home improvement projects. With demand rising for quick, realistic-looking visuals, Renoworks provides just that.

Renoworks’ values shape the way the company designs tools for efficiency and ease of use.

In the highly competitive roofing industry, a company’s values often determine how that company stands out. In this episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, Karen Edwards spoke with Brad Finck, senior vice president of business development of Renoworks, about how their company’s values guide their approach to contractor-focused solutions.

One of those values is “work like a farmer,” a mindset that recognizes the hard work of contractors’ day-to-day lives. “Being a contractor, like a farmer, takes long hours, a lot of time in the field and a lot of time away from home. Also, there is a limited amount of time to learn new technology,” Brad said. This mindset informs how Renoworks makes their products easy to learn and integrate into business operations. “Technology is one of those things that's got to be simple and easy, and everything that we do at Renoworks tries to initiate that mindset to produce the most efficient results that we can and make sure that the final solution is the best solution.”

Another similarity between construction and farming lies in how their methods have generally stayed the same throughout history. Where change does come into play is in the competitive landscape across the industry. “People need to figure out a way to become more efficient, close deals faster and make more money per project. That's where technology comes in,” Brad shared. “How do you set yourself apart from a contractor competitor who is using visualization technology or automated methods or lead nurturing? If you're not looking to some of these different technologies and new tools, you will end up falling behind at the end of the day.” Renoworks’ visualization and lead tools are just a couple of the ways that the technology helps contractors stay ahead of the curve.

Another core value at Renoworks is “adventure forward,” which encourages an inclination toward innovation and risk taking. “Everything is a risk. Having your own business is a risk; adopting technology is another risk,” Brad stated. The key is integration. “Look at what is the most efficient way to implement that into the systems that you're already using to minimize your downtime and get the maximum return on investment.”

With proper support, the payoffs are worth it. “With ‘adventure forward,’ there is risk, but if it's implemented properly — and that's what we're there to help you with — the rewards are quite substantial,” Brad expressed. “It can lead to better quality presentations, a higher quality lead and faster client product selection.”

Learn how this powerful visualizer turns dreams into reality.

For many homeowners, reroofing their house is an intimidating process that they don’t know much about. As a contractor, it’s your job to guide them through all of the vital parts of the reroofing process, from financing the cost to picking the right products. A great tool to keep in your back pocket for this is Renoworks Pro’s Design Estimator. To learn what this tool is, how it works and how it helps contractors guide homeowners through the reroofing process, we interviewed Jenni McMorran for an episode of Roofing Road Trips®.

The Design Estimator is both a visualization and estimation tool. Jenni explained, “We create a digital visualization or digital version of real products and put them into a visualizer platform. So then, a homeowner can upload of photo of their house and see apply manufacturer approved image of a product on it, to see how that's going to look on their own home before they do the remodel.” This ability to see the end-product of a project is incredibly helpful for homeowners who have never thought about the details that go into picking out different material specifications, like roof color or texture.

Additionally, because Renoworks collaborates directly with manufacturers to input products, they are able to show an estimate of the cost of a project based on the products a homeowner chooses in the visualizer. How are they able to do this? Jenni shared some behind-the-scenes insight:

“When we onboard a contractor with this program, they are able to set up metrics that affect the price. This is stuff like price per square foot, pitch, waste factor, all those kinds of details. Then, when a homeowner uploads their home and starts applying products, it taps into Eagle View's AI to pull the rough roof square area from the photo or from the address...So it pulls up the measurements for that address from the AI call and then it pulls on the metrics that the contractor already put in ahead of time. So that's where that number comes from.”

The result? A fairly accurate estimate and visual that makes it easier for your clients to fully conceptualize the project they are embarking on and the work you can do for them.

Simply going off of word of mouth when planning the details of a project can be tricky, both cost-wise and when it comes to matching customer tastes. This visualization software takes out the guesswork.

In this episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, host Karen Edwards sat down with Jenni McMorran, contractor channel partner manager for Renoworks, to discuss the brand’s game changing innovation, the Design Estimator. Available through the Renoworks Pro platform, this visualization program utilizes the latest technologies to bring projects to life.

Jenni shared, “We work with all the big exterior manufacturing companies to create digital visualizations of their real-life products, making them available on our platform for users to use. So, if someone uploads a photo of their house or a project they’re working on, they’re able to apply the actual manufacturer approved virtual images to their own home before they do the remodel.” Providing this life-like, hyper realistic look at products can make the buying process far more pleasant and gratifying for homeowners, and ensures contractors meet their customers' standards.

The benefits of utilizing such a platform go far beyond picking out aesthetic color palettes and material textures. It also gives homeowners a better idea of what is possible within their project budget, making the most of what they have! Jenni explained, “One of the biggest frustrations homeowners have is not knowing what the renovation will cost, and contractors struggle on the opposite side of that coin. They don't want to just throw out a number before they've had a chance to explain the value, craftsmanship or the materials behind the price. With the platform’s instant estimate, we solve both of those problems.”

When the price is right and the visuals are to the homeowner's taste, all parties can rest easy knowing that their project will be a success and leave with a positive experience. And the benefits of utilizing Renowork’s platform ecosystem go far beyond just visualization. Whether you need help with estimates and other business management processes, the program is perfect for the job.

Renoworks Pro offers instant project visualization, custom product selection and seamless integration.

In this episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, host Karen Edwards spoke with Brad Finck of Renoworks about the incredible benefits Renoworks Pro offers for dynamic consultations, easier web integrations and more closed sales. In this article, we take a closer look at some of the key features they discussed.

Instant visualizations with A.I.

Renoworks has been at the forefront of technology innovation in the roofing industry. For the past five years, they’ve harnessed the power of A.I. to produce realistic project visualizations in seconds, making for stronger presentations for contractors as they bring customers’ dreams to life.

“Because everything is now AI-based, within 10 seconds, you can upload a photo while sitting at the kitchen table with a homeowner, showing them products and variations as you're doing a consultation,” Brad stated. “It also works on a blueprint elevation for new construction. If you happen to be working with an architect who produces a rendering for you, you can upload that rendering and make those instant product selections on a new construction project as well.”

Custom product selection

The great thing about Renoworks Pro? It’s specifically designed with contractors in mind. They can pick and choose not only the manufacturing brands they want to sell, but also the specific profiles, styles and colors. This eliminates confusion for both contractors and homeowners, as the homeowners will only see what products the contractors sell.

“We kept hearing from our clients that they didn't want their homeowner clients making product selections that weren't available,” Brad explained. “So, whether they’re sending the visualizer tool directly to the homeowner or working with them in a consultative method, they can be confident that only the products that they carry are the ones that are going to be selected.”

Strong manufacturer relationships

Renoworks partners directly with over 400 manufacturers in all categories, including roofing, siding, brick, stone, window, doors and interiors.

“We have really good, direct relationships with the manufacturers. They are excellent and really cooperative,” Brad noted. “And that's really what a lot of Renoworks is about: those relationships, making sure that we keep the products as up to date as possible in an efficient manner.

Easy website and CRM integrations

While most manufacturers have already used Renoworks visualizers to showcase their products in past years, contractors are now catching up and realizing their effectiveness in selling and developing leads. As contractors develop more complex websites, having an embedded visualizer is becoming increasingly common.

“Getting the attention of a homeowner and keeping them on the website is always a challenge for any client,” Brad said. “So, a visualizer not only helps you engage the client, it keeps them on the website longer. Once they spend a little bit more time on the site, they're much more likely to give you information through a call to action, which results in a lead that goes directly to that contractor.”

Having a hard time making decisions about your residential project? Digital visualization tools are here to the rescue!

Editor’s note: Share this information with your customers who are considering a renovation or a remodel of their home.

Taking on a home renovation or remodeling project can be a daunting task, especially when so much of the work relies on imagining what the final result looks like. Or, at least, that used to be the case before home design simulators! Home visualizers allow users to bring their dreams to life through innovative technology. Unsure if you want to go with a sage green or dark gray exterior paint? A visualizer tool can show you the difference between the two in just moments for easy comparison!

There are many valuable programs on the market, and it can be a big decision deciding which visualizer to use. This guide, from the experts at Renoworks, breaks down the top recommended visualization tools!

What is exterior home design software?

Exterior home design software is a specialized digital tool that empowers users to create, visualize and plan the exterior aspects of home improvement projects. These programs are invaluable for homeowners, contractors and designers who aim to explore various design options for a home’s facade, landscaping, roofing and other exterior features.

Key features of exterior home design software include:

Giving your home’s exterior a paint job is one of the best ways to freshen up the look and keep in touch with the latest aesthetic trends! Even if you’re not in the market for a full-home paint job, adding a new coat to your garage door can make a major impact. Whether you’re adding a pop of bright color or going for a modern, sleek look, you would be surprised at how just a little bit of paint can go a long way in upping your curb appeal!

A freshly painted garage can increase your home’s resale value, improve energy efficiency and create a more cohesive design when paired properly with your siding, trim and front door. From the experts at Renoworks, take a deep dive into this guide that lists the latest trends in residential exterior color palettes and how to give your garage a new look!

Top exterior garage door paint colors in 2025

Your garage door often takes up 30% or more of your home’s front elevation, making it a dominant element of your exterior design. Choosing the right paint color is about more than just personal taste — it’s about finding a shade that complements your home’s architecture and boosts your property’s value.

Popular garage door paint colors:

Matte black – Ideal for modern and contemporary homes. Sleek and dramatic.

Charcoal gray – A versatile neutral that hides dirt and adds depth.

Navy blue – Great for traditional or Cape Cod-style homes.

Sage green – Earthy and understated. Works beautifully with stone and beige siding.

Creamy white – Clean and timeless. Especially suited for farmhouse and colonial styles.

Remember to factor in the color of your siding, trim and front door. The goal is a cohesive palette that makes your garage door a feature — not a distraction.

How to choose the right finish for garage paint

Not all paints are created equal — and when it comes to garage walls and doors, choosing the right finish is as important as choosing the right color. Flat or matte paints may be trendy indoors, but in the garage, they’re a magnet for dust, handprints and scuffs. A semi gloss or satin finish, on the other hand, offers a balance of durability and cleanability, making it ideal for high-traffic, functional spaces.

For garage doors, consider an exterior-rated gloss or satin. These sheens reflect more light and resist fading from UV exposure. On garage walls, semi gloss remains the top choice due to its resistance to moisture, mold and everyday wear. It also makes wiping down workbenches or dirty handprints much easier. If your garage sees a lot of activity, your finish should be ready for it.

Garage wall paint doesn’t have to be an afterthought. Whether you’re using the space as a workshop, gym or just for storage, the right wall color can brighten the room and make it feel more functional.

Recommended garage wall paint colors:

Light gray – Hides smudges while keeping the space bright.

Beige or taupe – Warm, welcoming tones for livable garages.

Bright white – Reflects light best. Ideal for darker garages.

Use semi gloss or satin finishes for garage wall paint — they’re easier to wipe clean and resist mildew in humid spaces. Avoid flat or matte paint as it will absorb stains and scuffs quickly.

Should you paint the inside of your garage?

Many homeowners focus solely on the garage door, forgetting that a fresh coat of paint inside the garage can transform it from a dingy catch-all into a clean, usable space. Painting garage walls improves visibility, reflects light for better safety and makes the area feel more inviting.

If you use your garage as a gym, workshop or entryway, lighter colors like white or light gray can help maximize natural and artificial lighting. And if your garage is uninsulated or prone to moisture, using mildew-resistant semi gloss paint can add longevity and cleanliness to your space. Don’t forget the ceiling and trim — painting those helps complete the clean, polished look.

Matching garage colors to home styles

Your garage should never look like an afterthought. Here’s how to align your garage paint with your home’s architectural style:

Colonial or traditional:

Best colors: Cream, navy, deep red

Accent with white trim and classic hardware

Modern or contemporary:

Best colors: Black, graphite, greige

Look for smooth textures and minimalist detailing

Craftsman or farmhouse:

Best colors: Olive green, tan, rust

Wood-grain doors and warm tones work best

Visual balance matters — your garage paint color should enhance your existing siding or stonework, not fight with it. When in doubt, use a visualization tool to preview combinations.

Garage paint ideas for attached versus detached garages

Your garage’s location plays a big role in how it should be painted. For attached garages, continuity is key. Choose garage wall and door paint colors that harmonize with your home’s exterior palette to create a seamless transition. Matching or complementing your siding and trim helps the garage feel like a natural part of the home’s architecture.

Detached garages, on the other hand, offer more design freedom. You can get creative with bolder paint color ideas — especially if the structure sits further back on your property or near gardens, fencing or landscaping elements. This is a great opportunity to introduce contrast while still staying visually consistent with your property’s theme.

Mistakes to avoid when painting your garage

Avoid these common pitfalls to make sure your garage paint job lasts and looks great:

Using interior paint on exterior garage doors – Always use paints labeled for outdoor use.

Skipping primer – Especially critical for metal or stained surfaces.

Using flat paint – Choose semi gloss for durability and washability.

Not cleaning before painting – Dirt, mildew or old grease can prevent adhesion.

Mismatched finishes – Stick to the same sheen for consistency across garage wall and trim.

How to prep garage walls and doors before painting

A great paint job starts with the right prep. Whether you’re repainting a garage wall or tackling a steel door, skipping preparation can lead to peeling, poor adhesion and uneven coverage. Start by thoroughly cleaning all surfaces using TSP cleaner or a degreasing solution to remove oil, dust and residue.

For garage doors, sand any peeling or rusted areas and always apply primer if painting over bare metal or switching from oil-based to latex paint. Garage walls with existing paint may need patching, sanding, and caulking before the first coat. Proper prep ensures your new garage paint adheres smoothly and lasts for years — not months.

Garage paint costs and common materials: What to expect

Before diving into your next garage painting project, it helps to know what materials you’ll need — and what it’s likely to cost. Whether you’re hiring a pro or tackling it yourself, garage paint projects are some of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make to your home’s exterior.

Average cost to paint a garage:

Garage door (single): $100–$200 for DIY / $250–$600 for pro service

Garage walls (interior, 2-car garage): $150–$300 for materials / $500–$1,200 for professional labor

Primer + paint bundle: $60–$120 depending on quality and brand

Prep materials (tape, drop cloths, cleaner, sandpaper): $30–$75

These costs can vary based on paint type, surface condition and whether you’re painting wood, metal or vinyl garage walls and doors.

Most common garage wall paint types:

Latex-based semi gloss: Easy cleanup, mildew resistant and great for high-traffic zones

Acrylic exterior paint: Ideal for garage doors that face direct sunlight

Epoxy paint (for concrete or floor spill zones): Durable, stain-resistant and waterproof

When painting a garage wall, always factor in moisture resistance and cleanability. Semi gloss latex paint is preferred because it doesn’t trap dust or oil and can be wiped down easily after projects, repairs or car maintenance.

Tools and products you’ll need

Before you get started, gather the right tools for the job:

Exterior latex paint (for garage doors)

Semi gloss or satin finish paint (for garage wall paint)

High-density foam rollers for smooth applications

Painters tape and drop cloths

TSP cleaner or degreaser for prep work

Paint primer if you’re covering metal or old oil-based layers

Recommended brands:

Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior

Behr Ultra Exterior Satin Enamel

Sherwin-Williams Duration Home

Seasonal considerations for garage painting

Timing your garage paint job right ensures proper adhesion and finish quality.

Spring and fall

Ideal temperatures (10°C to 25°C)

Lower humidity helps paint cure evenly

Summer

Avoid peak heat hours

Learn how Renoworks’ quote tools can help accurately calculate the cost of renovation projects, on any scale.

Editor’s note: Share this article with homeowners looking to renovate their properties.

Home renovations can be a major investment, in both time and money. A decision you don’t want to make lightly, it is crucial to consider all aspects of a desired renovation project’s result, and what that will look like cost and material wise. From minor upgrades to bathrooms or hallways to full kitchen renovations and larger scale dreams – renovations are tricky to navigate.

Which is why our team at Renoworks has created this thorough guide to renovation costs and how to utilize the Renoworks renovation quote tool to give you a realistic estimate based on your actual design and product choices — so you’re not left guessing.

Why budgeting for a remodel is so complicated and so important

Renovating your home isn’t just about picking out pretty tiles and dreaming up new layouts. It’s also about managing your renovation costs — and that starts with understanding what really drives those numbers up or down.

For starters, here’s what impacts the average cost of a home renovation:

Square footage: A larger project area means more materials, more labor and higher expenses.

Room type: Kitchens and bathrooms often cost the most per square foot because of the plumbing, fixtures and specialized work involved.

Material quality: Going with custom cabinets, designer lighting or stone countertops adds up fast.

Fixtures: Think sinks, bathtubs, faucets and lighting — these small choices can make a big dent in your budget.

Contractor pricing: Your contractor’s experience level, timeline and crew availability all affect final pricing.

Permits and inspections: These are often overlooked, but they’re necessary for structural changes, electrical updates and plumbing.

The process of renovating requires planning, trust in your contractor and a solid understanding of the renovation process from design to demolition and rebuild. If you’re new to remodeling, it can be intimidating — but the more informed you are, the better your decisions will be.

Renovation costs by room and project type

Let’s break things down by project type. This is where you’ll start to see how dramatically costs can vary — and why it’s smart to get tailored quotes based on your actual home.

Kitchen remodel costs

Kitchens are one of the most popular remodeling projects because of how much value they add to a home. But they’re also among the most expensive.

Minor kitchen remodels with refaced cabinets and basic fixtures: $23,000–$35,000

Midrange kitchen remodels with new cabinetry and appliances: $35,000–$65,000

High-end kitchen remodels with layout changes, high-end fixtures and premium finishes: $75,000–$100,000+

Kitchen remodels typically include plumbing, electrical, flooring, tile, cabinetry and lighting upgrades. Explore more kitchen design inspiration here. The average cost of kitchen remodels depends heavily on whether you’re renovating a small space or designing a full gourmet kitchen from scratch.

Bathroom remodel costs

The average cost to remodel a bathroom is about $8,000–$15,000 for a standard space. But if you’re adding custom tile work, a walk-in shower or upscale fixtures, the price climbs fast.

Small bathroom: $7,000–$12,000

Standard full bath: $12,000–$25,000

Primary bath with custom features: $25,000–$40,000

Bathroom remodels are also shaped by layout, plumbing reroutes, fixture choices and square footage. Always ask your contractor for a line-item quote so you can better understand how your average cost breaks down.

Exterior renovation costs

Exterior remodeling is one of the best ways to boost curb appeal — and it tends to deliver a strong return on investment. See top curb appeal upgrades and exterior ideas.

Siding installation (vinyl, fiber cement): $8,000–$20,000

Roof replacement: $10,000–$25,000

Window replacement: $500–$1,500 per window

Landscaping or hardscaping: $3,000–$15,000 depending on scope

An exterior home renovation can also include new garage doors, porch updates and improvements to walkways and driveways.

Basement and attic renovations

Finishing these underused areas adds living space without extending your home’s footprint. But keep in mind, the cost per square foot can vary widely depending on complexity.

Finished basement: $30–$75 per square foot

Converted attic: $40–$85 per square foot

Whether you’re adding a bathroom, home office or extra bedroom, these home remodel projects often require insulation, HVAC installation and electrical work.

Whole home renovation costs

If you’re planning to overhaul an entire home, you’re looking at serious investment — but also serious transformation. These projects often involve structural work, updated electrical and plumbing, layout changes and major cosmetic upgrades.

Cosmetic remodel: $50,000–$90,000

Full gut renovation: $150,000–$300,000

Complete teardown and rebuild: $250–$400+ per square foot

Whole home renovations are often completed in phases and require heavy coordination between contractors, designers and inspectors. These large-scale remodels typically include everything from kitchens and bathrooms to basements, roofs, flooring and windows.

What impacts the cost of renovating?

Your renovation price isn’t just tied to the size of the project. Many factors shape the average cost of a remodel, including:

Type of materials used

Labor rates in your area

Age and condition of your house

Complexity of the layout or design changes

Permit costs and inspections

Availability of skilled contractors

Understanding how these factors affect your final quote is key to staying on budget.

How to choose the right contractor for your home remodel

Finding a trustworthy contractor is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during a home remodel. The right professional can bring your vision to life, stay on budget and finish on time — while the wrong one can cause delays, unexpected costs and stress.

Start by asking friends or neighbors for referrals, and make sure to check online reviews and licensing information. Interview at least three contractors and ask for detailed estimates that break down labor, materials and contingencies. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about timelines, insurance and whether they’ll be on-site or subcontracting work.

Remember: a good contractor doesn’t just quote you a price — they educate you about what’s realistic based on your home, square footage and renovation goals.

Planning a whole house renovation: What to expect

Whole house remodels are transformative — but they’re also a big commitment. If you’re updating every room in your house, or gutting and rebuilding large areas, be prepared for a longer timeline, bigger budget and more decisions.

Expect to start with a home inspection and layout consultation. Then you’ll work with your contractor to phase the work by room or system (kitchen, electrical, HVAC, etc.). It’s important to get a quote based on square footage and project scope — and to build in time for approvals, inspections and ordering materials.

While some families move out during major renovations, others choose to live through them. In either case, planning ahead and understanding the full scope makes all the difference.

How remodeling projects affect homeowners emotionally and financially

A remodel isn’t just a financial investment — it’s an emotional one. Living through construction can be noisy, dusty and stressful. Decisions stack up fast, especially with big-ticket items like flooring, cabinetry and fixtures. And budget creep can add anxiety if you’re not prepared.

To stay sane, build in buffer time and budget. Make decisions early and stick to them. Lean on your contractor for guidance and remember why you started the remodel in the first place: to create a home that better supports your life.

Home renovation is one of the most personal projects you’ll ever take on. Give yourself space to be human during it.

Top mistakes to avoid when renovating your home

Even experienced homeowners fall into these common traps:

Underestimating average costs or square footage needs

Not having a clear scope or budget from the start

Hiring a contractor without checking credentials or references

Skipping permits to save time or money

Making late-stage changes that delay the timeline and increase costs

Avoid these pitfalls by doing your homework and leaning on expert advice throughout the remodel.

Is now the right time to remodel? How market trends influence renovation costs

Timing can impact both your budget and your peace of mind. During times of high demand — like spring and summer — contractors may charge more or have longer waitlists. Material prices can fluctuate due to supply chain issues, and interest rates may affect whether you use financing.

That said, there’s no perfect time to start a home renovation. If you have a clear vision, a good contractor and a strong quote, the right time might be now.

Watch trends but plan based on your life — not just the market.

Regional differences in remodeling costs

Where you live plays a major role in how much your renovation will cost. A kitchen remodel in a major metro like San Francisco or Toronto will cost significantly more than one in a smaller town. Local labor rates, permit fees, materials availability and even weather can influence project pricing.

Urban areas: Expect higher labor rates and permit costs

Rural or suburban areas: Lower contractor fees but limited material availability

Climate-specific upgrades: Some regions may require more robust insulation, window performance or HVAC systems, which adds to cost

It’s always smart to get estimates from local professionals who understand regional building codes and seasonal construction timelines.

Long-term ROI of home renovations

While upfront cost matters, it’s important to think long-term. Remodeling can boost your home’s resale value and make it more comfortable and efficient.

Projects with the strongest return on investment include:

Kitchen remodels (60–80% ROI)

Bathroom renovations (50–70% ROI)

Curb appeal upgrades like siding and roofing (70–90% ROI)

Energy-efficient upgrades like new windows, doors, insulation and HVAC systems not only increase home value but also reduce monthly costs — adding to their overall return over time.

If you’re planning to stay in your home long-term, prioritize improvements that enhance daily life: layout changes, additional bathrooms, smart home tech and storage upgrades.

Cost breakdown by line item

Want to understand where your money is going? Here’s a rough breakdown of how your total renovation budget may be allocated:

Labor: 30–50%

Materials: 25–40%

Fixtures and finishes: 10–20%

Permit and inspection fees: 5–10%

Contingency fund: 10–20%

Reviewing line items in your contractor’s estimate helps ensure transparency and lets you spot opportunities to save. Don’t be afraid to ask for alternate material suggestions or more affordable fixture options.

How to renovate smarter, not just cheaper

Here’s how homeowners make the most of their budget:

Focus on rooms with strong ROI — like kitchens, bathrooms and curb appeal upgrades

Stick with midrange materials for good value and durability

Avoid moving plumbing and load-bearing walls if possible

Compare contractor bids side-by-side

Lock in material selections before you build to avoid costly changes

Working with a contractor you trust is crucial. Ask for referrals, check reviews and confirm licensing. Be sure to discuss every detail of the remodel, including square footage changes, fixture installations and the scope of each renovation phase.

Sample renovation budgets and what they actually cover

Here’s how real-life renovation budgets shake out:

$10,000 or less: Paint, light fixtures, trim work and basic flooring upgrades

$10,000–$25,000: Bathroom remodel or partial kitchen upgrade

$25,000–$50,000: Midrange kitchen or bathroom remodel, new siding or window updates

$50,000–$100,000: Structural changes, major appliance upgrades and premium materials

$100,000+: Whole home renovation, layout redesign and luxury finishes

Don’t forget these hidden costs

Even a simple home remodel can go over budget when these surprise costs pop up:

Mold or water damage hidden behind walls

Upgrades to old electrical or plumbing to meet code

Flooring level changes from room to room

Custom fixture or cabinetry delays

Material backorders

It’s a good rule of thumb to set aside 10–20% of your total renovation cost as a contingency.

Why a tailored renovation quote matters

Most homeowners rely on general online estimates, which rarely reflect the actual costs in their market or for their specific home. That’s where a custom renovation quote makes a difference.

Renoworks gives you an edge by combining real material choices with regional contractor pricing and design intent.

You’ll get:

A quote based on real square footage and design inputs

Actual fixtures and materials pulled from top-tier brands

A list of qualified contractors who can execute your vision

The more detailed the quote, the fewer surprises — and the more confident you’ll be when hiring pros.

Final thoughts: Make every dollar count

Home renovation is never one-size-fits-all. From kitchen remodels to basement overhauls, every project comes with its own budget, timeline and challenges. The best remodels begin with solid research, realistic expectations and detailed quotes.

Take the time to learn about your home renovation options. Find design inspiration across every room and style. Know your square footage. Understand the average costs for each room. And above all, work with a contractor who respects your goals and your budget.

Once you have a clear plan, you’ll be able to move forward with confidence — and transform your house into the home you’ve always wanted.
