style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Jobba Trade Technologies.

As you start to decide on the project management software that is right for you, it is important to know the main features and functionality of your top picks.

Some providers only offer one or two solutions, but complete roofing software options offer a lot more that can help your company grow, succeed and ultimately put more money in your pocket. Our team at Jobba Trade Technologies has rounded up some of the main features within roofing CRMs to help you better understand how this piece of technology works for other successful roofing companies.

Project management tools

After a contract has been signed, it’s finally time to get started with the new roofing project. Keeping track of all tasks and milestones is incredibly important to maintaining a reasonable timeline and providing a great finished product to customers.

With your selected roofing CRM, you can keep all of your project information organized and allow for all team members to stay in the know. Everyone can view the project’s status as it continues to move through various stages. For example, if a project has gone from needing to be scheduled to the initial production stage, the team working on this project can see everything that is happening, if anything is needed from them and what the next steps are.

Crew scheduling

Crew scheduling has been proven to be one of the most difficult tasks a roofing company faces. Needing to see all of your field teams availability, being able to coordinate schedules, finding last minute replacements — there’s plenty of room for things to get mixed up or missed.

When it comes to getting your labor crew scheduled, your roofing software offers different features and functionality that allows you to view everyone’s schedules, including field crews, production managers, subcontractors and more.

These features make scheduling new roofing jobs a breeze.

Job estimates

When your salespeople go out into the field and are tasked with providing an estimate, it can either lead to a fast signature on the dotted line or, if the estimate is inaccurate or takes an extensive amount of time to draw up, can lead to a job loss to another roofing company.

Certain software solutions for roofers offer tools to auto-populate customer information and job site details (dimensions, deficiencies, desired products, etc.) to your estimates. This eliminates the need to manually enter data and reduces the risk of human error.

Customizable reporting

Sometimes roofing businesses have a tough time getting all the data they need regarding their business. That can be anything from individual salespeople’s metrics to overall business performance. Many industry leaders have found that customized reporting tools within their roofing CRMs can help them measure operations.

Some roofing applications like Jobba even offer reporting tools to help you track your business’s progress and measure performance.

Lead management

Lead management is a key factor in running a successful roofing sales department. If new leads get missed or overlooked, it could cost your company a potential job that might have brought in big profits. So how does one ensure you’re tackling all your leads in a timely manner?

Your roofing software can notify you of any incoming leads and provide some brief notes on the project. The right software solution also tracks all data and activities to provide a comprehensive view of your sales pipeline. This gives your salespeople more time to spend on searching out new prospects.

Communication history

Whether you are talking about internal or external communication, it is important to always know who has said what, when it was said and who it was relayed to. Communication problems are something that plague many different businesses in many different industries. But it is especially hard to keep track of for roofers since half of their teams are at numerous sites and not in the office.

Roofing software is designed to help bridge the communication gap that exists between cross-functional teams. It offers tools to help record different forms of communication between team members as well as with customers for the duration of a project. Team members have the ability to refer back to conversations to ensure nothing gets missed.

Photo capturing & editing tools

Having pictures associated with every project helps to identify deficiencies, shows the roof’s initial state and documents the finished product. It’s important that your teams who are in the field have a way to capture these things and share them with the rest of the team (and not lose the image in their camera roll).

Roofing technology provides contractors with tools to help manage photos of work and make notes on any specific areas that might need additional attention. Everyone that is ever on-site (salespeople, estimators, production crews) can upload photos to a roofing job’s file and view them at any time — all from their mobile device.

There’s no question that there are a lot of different kinds of tools and functionality within CRMs for roofing contractors. The easiest way to decipher what your business needs is to look at your business plan and the goals you have for the company. Those important items will tell you what areas need to be improved and what tools are needed to make that happen. Jobba uses a contractor-driven development approach, meaning that contractors tell us what they need and we build it. Set up a quick, 30-minute demo to find out what kind of tools we can build for you. Request your Jobba demo at jobba.com.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By John Kenney, Cotney Consulting Group.

Adopting a mindset of excellence is the baseline for staying ahead in today’s roofing industry.

Walk onto any job site in 2025 and you’ll see more than shingles and scaffolding; you’ll see an industry full of opportunity. With smarter technology, rising customer expectations and a drive for better performance, roofing is evolving fast. Contractors who embrace this momentum aren’t just keeping up, they’re pulling ahead. Here at Cotney Consulting Group, we believe the most successful companies aren’t just building roofs, they’re building systems that run like high-performance machines. Operational excellence is no longer optional, it’s the key to staying competitive, profitable and future-ready.

What is operational excellence in roofing?

Operational excellence isn't a program or one-time fix. Its philosophy encourages problem-solving, leadership and constant improvement at every level of the organization. It's about building a company culture where excellence becomes a daily habit — from the estimator to the crew leader.

For roofing businesses, this means:

Lower rework and callbacks

Faster production timelines

Greater customer satisfaction

Stronger profit margins

According to the Harvard Business Review, companies embracing operational excellence grow 25% faster and are 75% more productive than their peers. These numbers translate directly into competitive advantages in the roofing world.

Five roofing-specific benefits of operational excellence

1 – Workforce empowerment

Encourage your crews and office staff to identify problems and suggest improvements.

Use morning huddles and job site checklists to build accountability and foster team communication.

2 – Strategic leadership

Shift leadership focus from daily firefighting to strategic growth planning.

Empower field supervisors to manage quality and safety so owners and executives can pursue business development and expansion.

3 – Agility in a changing market

The roofing industry is shifting rapidly with new building codes, materials and labor models.

Operational excellence allows you to pivot quickly — whether adapting to solar integration, changes in OSHA standards or shifting customer expectations.

4 – Growth through repeatable systems

Standardizing job processes makes training new hires easier and accelerates onboarding.

With high turnover still impacting trades, streamlined training processes help maintain job quality.

5 – Efficiency equals profitability

Value-stream mapping can identify wasted time in material deliveries, project handoffs or communication breakdowns.

Reducing inefficiencies boosts margins without raising prices.

Three proven methodologies for roofing operations

1 – Six Sigma

A data-driven approach focused on eliminating defects and improving consistency.

Example for roofing: Use Six Sigma principles to identify causes of job site delays or service callbacks.

Process steps: Define → Measure → Analyze → Improve → Control

2 – Kaizen (Continuous improvement)

A Japanese philosophy meaning "change for the better."

Focuses on small, incremental changes driven by every team member.

Example for roofing: Implement weekly toolbox talks to collect feedback and solve field inefficiencies in real time.

3 – Lean roofing (based on Lean Manufacturing)

It centers around eliminating waste while increasing value for the customer.

In roofing, waste includes unnecessary trips, excessive material orders and inspection waiting.

Focus your team on the seven deadly wastes: overproduction, waiting, transport, motion, over-processing, inventory and defects.

2025 industry updates to integrate with operational excellence

Digital tools and automation

Integrate project management software like Jobba, AccuLynx or Roofr to create standardized workflows and reduce administrative friction.

Use AI-powered estimating tools to reduce human error and accelerate bid turnaround.

Labor efficiency

Companies are now cross-training crews to perform multiple job functions with the continued skilled labor shortage.

Robotics and automated equipment (like robotic seam welders) are beginning to enter commercial roofing for flat roof installations.

Sustainability pressures

Municipal and federal energy codes are evolving rapidly.

Building owners are demanding better documentation of energy efficiency and material use.

Operational excellence includes meeting compliance requirements to win bids and avoid fines.

Remote collaboration

Drone inspections and video conferencing with customers reduce unnecessary travel and increase project visibility.

Use remote communication tools to eliminate sales, production and service bottlenecks.

Executional excellence: The final step

Operational excellence builds the foundation, but execution excellence is where transformation becomes tangible. It's about ensuring your processes are not just well-designed but followed daily.

Executional excellence depends on:

A staff that understands the company's mission and takes ownership of results

Systems that track job performance, safety compliance and customer feedback

Leaders who coach, not just command, their teams

Final thoughts: Make operational excellence your culture

For roofing contractors, operational excellence isn't about perfection but continuous progress. It means delivering jobs safely, profitably and on time every time. It means building a business model where crews take ownership, leaders have time to lead and customers return repeatedly.

In 2025 and beyond, the best roofing companies won't just install roofs — they'll install systems, culture and excellence across every business layer.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Floor interviews, new product releases, Para Latinos awards and more!

Editor’s note: The following is the transcript of a conversation The Coffee Shops crew had after the first full day of the International Roofing Expo.

Karen Edwards: Day one of the International Roofing Expo (IRE) was so busy. There were so many people walking by our booth in the lobby, our alcove. It was an incredible first day. I got to walk around the show floor doing videos with our partners in their booths, and everybody was busy. The energy was high. People are happy. There are lots of new products. The Catch All, we were in their booth, and he had four new products available for pre order, not even on their website yet, but was really cool stuff, and it's just exciting and energetic to see all the people and all the new things that are coming to the roofing industry.

Alex Tolle: We got a new R-Club member yesterday, Noreaster Roofing, and they're based out of Nova Scotia. So pretty exciting to get another Canadian R-Club member and a lot of traffic at the booth. A lot of contractors are really interested in what we do. And a lot of people taking pictures of the booth and of the interviews, kind of felt like we were celebrities up there, and they were excited to see what we were doing.

Megan Ellsworth: I was working the sound stage, interviewing all of our partners that we work with on The Coffee Shops. And I think my favorite interview was all of them. I'm not going to say my favorite because I can't think of one because they're all so good, but some standouts were Central States Building Works and Melissa Dunson, love her. Wendy Marvin with Matrix Roofing and Home Solutions. She's amazing and really cares about her customers and has a lot to say about the industry. The show was absolutely a complete success. For day one, everyone I talked to on the soundstage said that their booth was swamped with people and that it was nice to get away and be able to sit for a minute.

Then we went to the Brava Roof Tile hospitality. We love Brava, their roof tiles and their products are just so beautiful. And so we were really happy to support them, take some photos at their event. And then we hopped over to the EagleView hospitality and got to see our friends, Rob Soper, Piers Dormyer and all the EagleView pals. They're so great. And then we went to Polyglass and got to see Bud Polston and Steve Wadding. And it was just a really, really great night. And the Polyglass party was super fun because it was at Howl at the Moon, and they had the best music. Steve is a hoot and a half.

Lauren White: I was one of the floor teams with Zane, and we also walked around the show floor and met with all of our partners, and everyone is always just so excited to see us in their booths, and they're excited to talk about what new things they have going on and to really highlight their booths. And this year, I feel like a lot of people wanted to give us a full booth tour. We had a full day of interviews, and our booth setup looks great. Everyone who saw our booth was talking about our setup in the alcove and excited to see what we’re up to. And we also sponsored the First-time Attendees Reception right before the ABC Supply Welcome Party, and that was a great turnout. We handed out some branded koozies that were fun and people enjoyed and then we kind of divided and conquered from there and went to different hospitalities. And the band was really great at Polyglass and we had a good time there.

Itzel Najera: I was also on the floor in interviews. It was quite an interesting morning. We got to interview SRS Distribution partners, Amparo from Latinos en Roofing and we got to meet several contractors. One of the things I really enjoyed was at the end of the day, we got to see the SRS Para Latinos awards, and it was amazing just seeing all those contractors get recognized for their hard work. We also got to go to the SRS cocktail lounge, and that was really fun. They had great music. I feel like SRS has really cool events that we go to, and I really enjoy that.

Evelyn Witterholt: We had back-to-back soundstage interviews all day long. It never stopped. But they were all really good. And I think our booth is in a really incredible spot this year, because right when the show floor opened, we got so much foot traffic and so many people. The amount of people I saw yesterday just stopping to stare at our booth and see who we are and what we're doing was really incredible. The few times I got to walk away from our booth and come back, the amount of people hanging out in the lounge area and taking our swag was really something to see. And I'm getting a lot of good content for our social media.

Dani Sheehan: I was also on the show floor pretty much the entire day. Walked almost 20,000 steps for the day. But it was really incredible, especially being able to see everyone and everything getting set up yesterday, and the madness of bringing it all together. It was so cool to walk into the show on day one and see just how incredible it is. So many of our partners are here with us. It was really great to see everybody, and I felt like a celebrity walking around and talking to people, seeing what they're doing and talking about what’s new in the industry this year.

Jessica Bravo: Honestly, day one was amazing. I was on the show floor, and I attended Spanish sessions from GAF that Alan Lopez hosted. My favorite interview has to be with Ana Maria from CertainTeed. She was talking about how everything they offer at their booth is in English and Spanish. So, I thought that was pretty cool. And we also spent most of our day with SRS at their Para Latinos booth. Very huge success.

Zane Delucci: I had a great first day at IRE. Some of my first expeditions in general. So that was really nice. Walked around with Lauren, and my favorite part so far has been the software talks that we've had. So that includes Sales Assist, Jobba, Leap, EagleView, Estimating Edge, those companies have been really great to talk to learn from. A rose and a thorn would be loved to just talk to new folks and learn their stories. And the thorn would be, it's cold. It's very cold, but no complaints. Looking forward to day two.

In case you missed it, watch our soundstage interviews LIVE from IRE 2025 on our YouTube Channel!

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Heidi J. Ellsworth.

The 2024 competition will include student contestants from 12 states competing to win the commercial roofing thermoplastic competition.

The roofing industry has come together to help fund a larger Career Technical Education (CTE) program lead by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). With the first focus on SkillsUSA happening June 24-28, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia the industry has donated over $170,000 just for 2024 to help not only fund a roofing presence at SkillsUSA but also support continuing CTE activity.

This year’s roofing exposure and student competition is expected to be greatly expanded from the 2023 national competition that featured competitors in the thermoplastic roofing competition from four states. The 2024 competition will include student contestants from 12 states competing to win the commercial roofing thermoplastic competition.

Helping to make this possible is the Roofing Alliance, who demonstrated their commitment to fostering education and attracting new talent to the roofing industry by pledging $150,000 over three years to fund Career Technical Education (CTE) initiatives. This significant contribution enables the NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee to make substantial strides in educating and drawing the next generation of roofing professionals.

The NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee has a subcommittee that works to secure funding for various CTE initiatives within the roofing industry. These initiatives include participation in SkillsUSA, the Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE), and the Correctional Education Association (CEA), among others. The NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee members and volunteers are dedicated to ongoing funding efforts to build and expand CTE outreach. This initiative is supported by multiple sources, including NRCA, industry partners and the Roofing Alliance.

As noted, NRCA will host the Roofing Pavilion at the 2024 SkillsUSA NLCS “Techspo” from June 24-28, 2024. This will be NRCA's second time showcasing roofing (beyond a tabletop display) at this premier skills competition in the career and technical education sector.

The Roofing Pavilion, a 20’ x 70’ space will feature a roofing project display with a 20’x40’ roofing project on a staired scaffold featuring a thermoplastic welding display and demonstration with an interactive competition for all SkillsUSA participants. Competitors will also have access to product samples of steep roofing products, including asphalt shingles, tile and metal along with an estimating experience demonstrating roofing estimating software and additional interactive goggle technology.

Several industry leading companies have committed to sponsoring the 2024 SkillsUSA program. With a combined contribution of over $120,000 in funds that were then matched with $50,000 per year for three years by the Roofing Alliance. Donations were provided by:

When implementing new roofing software, you’ll want to have a team who will make sure the transition is successful.

When looking at different roofing software, there’s a lot of considerations you are sure to make. What features does it have? How much does it cost? But one element you might be overlooking is the benefit of having a customer success team or manager that will make sure you are using the software to its fullest potential.

Ensuring a smooth onboarding experience

Starting with new software can feel daunting, and the initial experience can significantly influence your entire journey with the product. A customer success manager or team guides you through the onboarding process, answers your questions and helps you quickly adapt to the software, ensuring you maximize its potential from day one.

Modifying the software to your needs

No two businesses are exactly alike, and your software needs may be unique. A customer success team collaborates closely with you to understand and comprehend your specific requirements, which helps them tailor the software to meet those needs. A personalized approach ensures that you’re not left with a one-size-fits-all solution that doesn’t quite fit.

Providing ongoing support

Software issues can arise at any time, and having a dedicated team to turn to when problems occur is invaluable. A customer success team provides continuous support, promptly resolves issues and minimizes downtime, which is essential for you and your business’s productivity and success.

Maximizing ROI

Investing in new software involves more than just finances, it’s an investment in your business’s efficiency and growth. A customer success team assists you in getting the most value from your investment by showing you how to use the software to its fullest potential, which can result in a higher return on investment and a more competitive edge.

Staying informed about updates and enhancements

Software constantly evolves, with regular updates and the introduction of new features. A customer success team keeps you informed about these changes and helps you take advantage of new functionalities. This guarantees that your software stays up-to-date and aligns with your business’s needs.

Addressing concerns and feedback

Software issues can arise at any time, and having a dedicated team to turn to when problems occur is invaluable. A customer success team provides continuous support, promptly resolves issues and minimizes downtime, which is essential for you and your business’s productivity and success.

Building a long-term partnership

When you invest in new software, you’re not just purchasing a product; you’re forming a partnership. A customer success team is there to build and nurture this partnership, ensuring that your software provider is committed to your long-term success.

Knowing that you have a dedicated team of experts ready to support you can provide peace of mind. This assurance makes your software investment less risky and more likely to contribute positively to your business. As you evaluate your software options, consider the presence of a customer success team or manager as a critical factor in your decision-making process.

In a special webinar, Jobba and Service Alignment offer a unique discussion on the challenges businesses face when adding technology to their processes.

In the evolving roofing industry, technology has become a key to success. From automating tasks to enhancing communication, contractors are embracing technology as a means to streamline their operations and boost efficiency. Yet, despite the promises that technology holds, many companies find themselves still struggling with persisting process problems.

On September 27, 2023, Jobba hosted a special webinar, "Why Technology Won’t Fix Your Process Problem," shedding light on the intricate relationship between technology and business processes. Leading the discussion was special guest, Chad Westbrook, the founder of Service Alignment. Westbrook was joined by long-time friend and senior account executive at Jobba Trade Technologies, Zach Carpenter. With their extensive experience and expertise, they offer unique perspectives on the challenges businesses face when integrating technology into their processes.

Chad Westbrook is a B2B sales and service expert who has dedicated the last 18 years to building sustainable, scalable sales and service teams. Chad has had some of the most influential mentors in the industry help shape what is a proven process today. He believes that the key to building a successful business lies in creating a system that operates seamlessly — even in the absence of its creators. As Chad says, “Building a successful business means it runs without you.”

Zach Carpenter brings a wealth of knowledge regarding technology and its integration within the roofing industry. He has over 16 years of experience and has worked with thousands of roofing contractors, helping to improve their business processes through technology. He has extensive experience in roofing software products on the market and was a part of the team when FCS was originally founded.

The four-step framework for success

The webinar is centered around a comprehensive four-step framework that holds the key to running a world-class roofing organization. This framework is composed of:

People

Process

Technology

Goals

Chad hopes that, in the end, roofing professionals will understand that success is based on a repeatable process that can scale without being dependent on rainmakers to drive the business.

You can watch this exclusive webinar anytime on demand to gain insights from these industry experts and discover why technology alone might not be the only answer for your business challenges. Watch the webinar and take the first step toward enhancing your organization's performance.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Dani Sheehan.

In an era of endless data, business intelligence can help you evaluate your company’s success and reach your benchmarks.

In August’s RLW® from RoofersCoffeeShop®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with Eugene Zukowski of Jobba Trade Technologies, John Kenney of Cotney Consulting Group and Trent Cotney of Adams and Reese LLP to share insights on business intelligence (BI) and how owners can scale their businesses with the right data. The three industry experts discuss how to incorporate BI into business functions to improve company success.

BI is one of those terms that gets thrown around frequently, but it’s not often understood exactly how it’s good for business. As Eugene defines it, “Business intelligence is understanding the data in your business, so you have an insight into what your company is actually doing... What’s my data telling me? And it’s the ability to look at that information and make good executive decisions.”

Gathering data is not a new process in the industry. Heidi jokes about the evolution of gathering data from handing in a notebook to creating Excel charts to the advancements available today. John says it can be overwhelming because we now live in an era of data overload. “There's a ton of data that you can track just for the sake of tracking data, right? It's kind of like an app on your phone that tracks everything you do in a day or all your body functions, blood pressure, all the different things. It can be too much. So, what you want to do is take and understand what numbers really mean to your particular business.”

The consensus is that too much data is just as harmful as no data at all. As Eugene reiterates, “I kind of look at it like paralysis by analysis, because you’re looking at so much information, you don’t know what to do with the information you have.” Business intelligence isn’t so much about the gathering of data, but how you use it. Trent adds, “I kind of view business intelligence as an opportunity to, for lack of a better word, weaponize data. You get the opportunity to see where you are weak and fix it. And if you are paying attention to the data, you can correct problems.” This allows your business to operate proactively rather than reactively, which mitigates potential legal issues, safety issues, employee issues and more, and instead propels your company to greater growth and continued success.
