• Light Transmitting Panels (LTPs) cannot support a person’s weight, so never walk on them.

• Guard all LTPs and roof openings.

• Step only on the panel flat, directly on or close to a supporting roof structure.

Metal roof skylights not only enhance the aesthetic charm of architectural spaces but also offer a variety of other benefits. 

Metal roof skylights offer more than just aesthetic appeal; they provide numerous benefits, including enhanced natural lighting, energy savings and mold prevention. When integrating skylights into metal roofing systems, it’s important to understand the different types of skylights available, proper placement, orientation and safety considerations for maximizing their effectiveness. For this reason, MBCI has developed a guide of what to consider during the specification and pre-installation phases of this process. 

There are two common types of metal roofing skylights — Light Transmitting Panels (LTPs) and Curb Mount Skylights. LTPs, made from translucent materials, can be used in both metal roofs and walls! Available in a variety of panel profiles, LTPs can be formed to match whatever system they are being installed with. Curb mount skylights feature a raised structure around the roof opening and are available in many shapes and styles. 

Once the type of skylight has been chosen, it’s vital to identify the proper placement and orientation for optimizing the benefits of skylights. During planning, identify the best location to maximize light penetration while avoiding obstructions below. According to MBCI, “With southern exposure, skylights provide an excellent level of passive solar heat during the colder winter months while keeping cooling costs down during the summer heat. On the other hand, a skylight with western exposure will increase cooling costs if the structure is in a warm climate.”

While metal roofs are designed to last with little need for maintenance, metal can still be vulnerable to extreme weather. Regular maintenance is important to keep it functioning as intended. Here are five maintenance guidelines to ensure a long-lasting roof: 

1 - Prioritizing safety 

MBCI strongly emphasizes safety. It’s no secret that being a roofing contractor is a dangerous job considering people are on rooftops daily. This is why MBCI advocates for strict adherence to OSHA regulations and other safety standards. Fall protection and personal safety equipment are non-negotiable, as failure to comply can lead to serious injury or death and substantial fines. 

2 - Routine checks and maintenance 

An annual roof check is crucial. MBCI advises that contractors, “Check the joints in roof panels and associated trims for proper seals and loose fasteners." For any repairs needed, contacting the original installation contractor or MBCI is recommended. 

3 - Gutter care and drainage 

Keeping gutters and downspouts clear is important to roof performance, and MBCI, recommends this cleaning be done at least twice a year. MBCI warns against practices that could impede water flow, such as "using wood to support rooftop equipment or pipes, which contains salts or copper sulfate which deteriorates the roof and voids the warranty coverage." It’s also important to make sure any appliances mounted on the rooftop, like AC units and evaporative coolers, are properly equipped with correct drainage systems to avoid water ponding on the roof.  

4 - Regular inspections 

Regular inspections are vital, especially after severe weather events. MBCI encourages inspecting roofs for "debris, loose panels/trims/fasteners/closures and punctures" after high winds and for damaged trim and loose fasteners after hailstorms. 

5 - Managing foot traffic 

One way to prolong the life of a metal roof is managing foot traffic. MBCI suggests installing roof walkway systems and minimizing unnecessary traffic to protect the metal roof systems.

Don’t let poor pipe penetration locations and installation compromise the life of a metal roof. 

One of the most compromising parts of a metal roof’s performance is when pipe or flue penetrations are improperly installed to accommodate other building systems. If you are offering commercial metal roofing services or looking to add them to your business, make sure you know how to properly install pipe and flue penetrations. Below are a few tips to add to your success. 

1 – Learn proper installation 

As with any aspect of the roofing system, it’s important that you’re qualified to install the element, to help avoid leaks, building damage and other unnecessary expenses; this applies to cutting and installing appropriately flashed and booted pipe penetrations. If you are looking to add metal to your roofing skill base, you also might consider enrolling in MCBI’s Installer Certification Training Courses for hands on installation training.  

2 – Use the right materials 

It’s so important to use the right material! Residential type roof jacks won’t last over time compared to rubber roof jacks made specifically for metal roofs. Proper commercial roofing products combine an EPDM rubber boot with a band made of bonded aluminum to allow for a compression seal at the roof panel. You also want to avoid materials like copper, lead and galvanized metal roof jacks that can corrode the metal roof system. The entire system is only as secure as the shortest life of its products. You’ll want to only use tape and caulk sealants approved by the manufacturer and long-life fasteners for any exposed fastener applications to avoid reducing the life of the entire system. 

3 – Assess proper roof flue and pipe penetration locations 

Before creating a penetration, ensure it can be properly sealed and does not have any immediate obstructions that might compromise the performance of the pipe or flue penetration. Some areas to keep in mind include: 

• Choose a location for the roof penetration on a smooth or flat area of the roof’s surface. 
• Find a location that has the least amount of water drainage around it to place the penetration. 
• Don’t allow a pipe location to block the flow of water and create unnecessary buildup.

Substrates are an important component in a metal roofing system. The metal experts at MBCI share their insights.

Substrates, also known as substructures, are an important part of a metal roofing system and are the layer that metal panels are installed on. The roof's substrate layer provides a structural frame that supports the metal roofing materials. In other words, think of the substrates as the bones of a roof, supporting the exterior layers while protecting the structure beneath.  If a roof is installed correctly, the substrate should not be visible. 

The main functions of a substrate are its role as a base for which fasteners and clips are attached, securing the metal roofing panels in place, and as a structure that aids in bearing the weight load from any debris or mounted structures on the roof.  

While there are many kinds of substrates, in metal roofing, one of two types will be used: open framing and solid. Open framing substrates use individual pieces of wood or metal framing to secure the metal roof with structural style panels where the design supports the weight of the roof. Solid substrates, on the other hand, consist of solid metal sheets or wood laid closely together and are used with non-structural panels. In solid decking substrates, the roof membrane is applied atop the substrate.  

When planning a roofing project, it is important to consider the roof’s purpose and the type of building it will be built on so that your installers choose the right kind of substrate and additional materials.

Is your standing seam roof designed for water shedding? Find out how to prevent water damage in water shedding standing seam roofing systems.  

While many would categorize standing seam roof systems as structural or architectural, these terms are not the only classifications used to define them. Instead, MBCI metal roof expert Amy Crenan, has pointed out that these systems are better categorized as either water shedding or water barrier systems.  

Water shedding standing seam roofing systems are designed to shed water simply by the force of gravity, eliminating the threat of water gathering on or underneath the panels and causing damage. However, this design is not always foolproof, and there are additional precautions that can be taken to ensure that these systems don’t take on excess water.  

In her blog post for MBCI, Amy points out that the steeper the roof, the quicker the water will run off the structure. Because of this, installers want to be sure that they install these roof systems at a pitch of 3:12 or more so that gravity is sure to better shed water.  

As water shedding panel systems are always considered architectural panels, not structural, it is critical that they be installed over a solid roof deck, one that is efficiently covered with a quality membrane to protect the structure beneath from moisture damage. This membrane barrier will be the structure's main barrier preventing water or moisture from getting inside, so making sure that the membrane is secure will protect the home or building.
