NFBA leaders outline how the Oklahoma City event will deliver practical learning, meaningful connections and industry insight.

The post-frame industry will gather in Oklahoma City February 25-27, 2026, for the 58th Annual NFBA Building Expo 2026, an event designed to deliver practical education, hands-on demonstrations and high-value networking for builders, suppliers and manufacturers.

In this episode of MetalCast™, Karen Edwards spoke with National Frame Building Association (NFBA) leaders about what attendees can expect. Morgan Arwood, NFBA membership director, discussed the structure of the education program and encouraged attendees to plan ahead: “We have three tracks of education: business management is one, sales and marketing is another and the third is safety and technical. If I could offer any advice to somebody who's interested in attending, go ahead and look at the schedule, plan out which educational sessions you want to go to.”

Speakers will include MCS Influencers Stacee Lynn, “The Barndominum Lady®” and Oliver Bell from The Barndominium Company™, along with Paul and Emily Marshall, “Mr. and Mrs. Post Frame,” offering insights tied directly to today’s post-frame market. “We really try to bring education that is going to speak to a traditional builder,” Morgan shared.

Beyond the classroom, the expo floor will feature an interactive build with a purpose. NFBA vice president Josh Nowlin explained that attendees will be able to see post-frame construction in action while supporting the local community. “We're going to do a shed building this year and we're going to build it out post frame style,” Josh said. “Certain times each day will demo certain aspects of the construction. We're going to feature products from some of our vendors that will be installed onto the project, and once the show's over, we can donate it to a local women's shelter.”

The event’s keynote will focus on the economic outlook shaping construction decisions nationwide. NFBA president Joe Shimp shared his excitement about the keynote speaker Dr. Anirban Basu, chairman and CEO of Sage Policy Group. “He is a phenomenal economic speaker who brings some comedic relief to a boring subject. He has the energy to take any difficult, technical topic and make it entertaining,” Joe stated. “A lot of our members have a desire to know more about the economic climate right now. So it's great timing.”

Finally, the panel stressed how networking is one of the cornerstones of the whole expo experience. “Whether you're a manufacturer, supplier, vendor, builder, supplier — it doesn't matter,” Josh expressed. “If you're in the post frame industry, this is an event you don't want to miss because of the networking: the networking in the hallway, the networking at dinner, the networking at the continental breakfast or whatever is, is where it's at. I personally have built lasting relationships just attending the show. It's phenomenal for that.”

The show’s growth in technical education and charitable outreach demonstrates why it remains a cornerstone event for the metal construction industry.

Another successful METALCON is in the books, and the conversations leading up to the event offered valuable insight into why the show continues to resonate with industry professionals. In this MetalCast™ episode recorded before the expo, Karen Edwards spoke with METALCON Tradeshow Director Judy Geller about what makes the event unlike any other.

Judy emphasized the show’s singular focus on metal and its role as a comprehensive education hub. “One of the things that we feel very, very strongly about is that METALCON is the only show that is really all about metal construction,” she stated. “We are well aware that there are a lot of other shows out there. But this is the only show that completely focuses on the application of metal in construction and design.”

To take advantage of their unique position in the industry, METALCON offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for professionals to talk to experts, discover new products and get hands-on training. Sponsored by Sherwin-Williams, the training zone increases in size and scope every year.

“John Sheridan and his crew offer two and a half days of hands-on training, and it is buzzing,” Judy shared. “From the time the show floor opens until we throw them out at the end of the day, they’re showing installers and contractors — in English and in Spanish —how to up-skill and finesse everything they do. They'll show you how to use the right tools and how to improve your techniques.”

METALCON also continued its tradition of giving back, reinforcing a mission that extends beyond the exhibit floor. One of the most ambitious efforts showcased this year right on the show floor. “We are building a barndominium for charity,” Judy said. In partnership with the Military Warriors Support Foundation, the Scottsdale Construction Company and Oliver Bell and Stacee Lynn of the The Barndominium Company, the frame for Eagles Landing, a 2,500 square foot retreat center for veterans, was assembled at the center of the show floor. After METALCON, the frame was disassembled, moved to Hall, Montana, where it will be completed in 2026 to serve as a retreat for combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star families.

With countless opportunities for education and giving back, METALCON reminds us why it’s an experience you just can’t miss.

The metal building industry is being transformed by new technologies that streamline planning and execution:

Advanced design software: Modern platforms integrate design, engineering and supply chain data, making projects faster, more accurate and visually appealing.

AI design tools: AI lowers barriers to entry, allowing more people to contribute creative ideas while ensuring safety and engineering standards are met. This shift is changing traditional roles and opening the field to new talent.

Other key innovations:

BIM: Enables real-time collaboration and reduces errors.

Prefabrication and modular construction: Speeds up building and cuts waste.

AR/VR: Lets stakeholders visualize projects before construction.

IoT and smart sensors: Provides real-time monitoring for better maintenance and sustainability.

METALCON 2025 reinforced the strength of the metal construction industry as a place where learning, collaboration and support continue to grow year after year.

METALCON 2025 was one for the books – a week full of energy, innovation and community that reminded us why we love this industry. From the moment the doors opened, the show floor buzzed with excitement. For our crew representing MetalCoffeeShop®, it was an unforgettable few days filled with live interviews, inspiring stories and a shared passion for metal construction.

The show kicked off with Metal & Mimosas: “We heard from a wonderful speaker named Jennifer Wilkerson from the NCCER, who shared groundbreaking research about women in the trades,” Karen Edwards, The Coffee Shops™ COO, shared. “They did focus groups, gathered statistics and shared real stories from women in the field. The message was clear – we need to do better, and there are tangible ways to create a more supportive environment for women in the trades.”

For Jessica Bravo, our en Español program coordinator, attending her first METALCON, the morning set the tone for the entire event. “It was such a great experience! The session offered the opportunity to connect with incredible women in the industry,” she said.

Over all three days, attendees had countless opportunities to learn and engage. Jessica attended an all-women’s training event on day two with Michelle Kettering and John Sheridan of Sheridan Metal Resources, and the company hopes to expand its Training Zone even more next year.

The impressive barndominium build was another centerpiece of the event. “Probably the most impressive part of the show as the barndominium built right in the middle of the floor,” emphasized Heidi Ellsworth, president and CEO of The Coffee Shops. “We interviewed the architect, Stacy Lynn, owner of The Barndominium Company™, along with Derek from Scottsdale and several sponsors who donated materials and time to make it possible. The fact that this home will go to a veteran through Semper Fi & America’s Fund makes it even more special.”

That interview with Adam Bautz, a graduate of the Semper Fi & America’s Fund Apprenticeship, and Nancy Riley from METALCON, stood out for Zane Deluccie, our multimedia producer who was behind the laptop capturing content throughout the entire show. He shared, “Adam has an amazing story, and the interview felt so natural. It was an incredible spotlight on the importance of community in our industry.”

Our MetalCoffeeShop soundstage, sponsored by Sherwin-Williams and the MetalVue program, was busier than ever – right at the entrance to the show floor. We welcomed industry leaders, manufacturers and innovators, capturing the full spectrum of what’s happening in metal construction today.

Karen also co-hosted the speed networking event with industry friend and partner Fiona Maguire-O'Shea from S-5!®. “The networking even was a huge hit – people were so engaged that we had to keep telling them ‘time’s up!’ so we could rotate partners,” Karen shared.

METALCON continues to be a space where ideas turn into action, and we’re proud to be part of sharing those stories. Until next year, thank you to everyone who stopped by the soundstage, shared their insights and helped make METALCON 2025 an unforgettable experience.

Learn about the origins and present-day trends of barndominiums.

In the wake of COVID-19, The Coffee Shops saw a surge in chatter and demand for barndominiums — residential and commercial buildings designed to offer large spaces with high ceilings and owner flexibility. Stacee Lynn, also known as "The Barndominium Lady" and founder and owner of The Barndominium Company, discussed the rise of barndominiums in this episode of MetalCast™.

While most people think the term ‘barndominium’ comes from Texas, likely due to its popularity in the state, Stacee says the term can trace its origins back to Connecticut.

“A developer in Connecticut back in the late 1980s had an equestrian community, and he imagined selling acreage lots to homeowners who owned horses,” Stacee explained. “He wanted to create a barn where people could board their horses, so they didn't have to do the day-to-day work to manage the horses, but the horses were close by. He said it was a barn, and they're like condominiums for the horses. So, he called it ‘barndominium.’”

Fast forward to today, where the building trend is spanning multiple states, purposes and environments. Barndominiums are becoming increasingly common in the United States. Stacee highlighted a few of the latest trends she’s seen, one being glass garage doors.

“Glass garage doors are super popular,” Stacee offered. “You can open it up during parties or very nice days, which makes for a nice event and lots of natural light when they're closed. It just looks like a big, pretty window.”

Other trends Stacee noted were pass-through kitchen windows and customizing ceiling beams. She shared, “We're incorporating brick and stone on our elevations to really give [these homes] a lot of ‘wow.’ A lot of folks are deciding to upsize some of their steel beams inside the house so that they can paint them black and leave them exposed.”

Another exciting trend that Stacee has experimented with is giving the classic front porch a new and exciting twist. She shared, “On a gable roof line, we continue that gable extension to include what we call the side porch, which is very easy to do. It's an economical way to do it.” She continued, “You get super high ceilings, you can put outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces. Some people screen them in, so you can open up that glass garage door and never have to worry about a bug. It's really the extension of your home life.”

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

MCS Influencer Oliver Bell says contractors can remain competitive and differentiate themselves using three strategies

In today's dynamic construction market, characterized by significant mergers and acquisitions, it is crucial for residential and commercial building contractors to adopt strategies that ensure competitiveness and differentiation. Here are some key approaches:

1 - Stand-alone operational options

Innovation and technology adoption: Embrace cutting-edge technologies and software such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), prefabrication and sustainable building practices. These innovations can enhance efficiency, reduce costs and improve project outcomes.

Quality and customer service: Focus on delivering high-quality work (best practices) and exceptional customer service. Building a reputation for reliability and excellence can set you apart from competitors.

Specialization: Consider specializing in niche markets or unique construction techniques. This can help you become a go-to expert in a specific area, attracting clients looking for specialized services.

2 - Partnering operational options

Strategic alliances: Form partnerships with other contractors, suppliers and technology providers. These alliances can lead to shared resources, expertise and expanded service offerings.

Joint ventures: Collaborate on larger projects through joint ventures. This approach can help you tackle more significant projects that would be more challenging if approached independently.

Industry networks: Engage in industry networks and associations. These connections can provide valuable insights, opportunities for collaboration and access to new markets.

3 - Leveraging social media and AI

Social media marketing: Utilize social media platforms to showcase your projects, share client testimonials and engage with your audience. Effective social media marketing can enhance your brand visibility and attract new clients.

AI for project management: Implement AI-driven project management tools to optimize scheduling, resource allocation and risk management. AI can help streamline operations and improve decision-making.

Data analytics: Use data analytics to gain insights into market trends, customer preferences and project performance. This information can guide strategic decisions and improve overall efficiency.

By adopting these strategies, residential and commercial building contractors can remain competitive and differentiate themselves in a rapidly evolving market. If you have any questions or would like to discuss these strategies further, please feel free to reach out.

Those of you attending METALCON in Las Vegas, scheduled for October 21-23, will certainly notice the construction of a steel-frame building on the show floor.

METALCON and industry partners are constructing the 2,500-square-foot “barndominium” at the show, before using the framing for a permanent veterans’ retreat in Montana.

Designed by Stacee Lynn, known as “The Barndominium Lady,” this retreat was shaped in collaboration with the Military Warriors Support Foundation to meet the unique needs of those it’s intended to serve. Stacee Lynn, founder of The Barndominium Company, is known for blending bold aesthetics with functional living.

“Being a part of the Eagle’s Landing Veteran project to design and build a veterans’ retreat facility in Montana is an incredibly meaningful experience for me and The Barndominium Company,” says Stacee Lee. “The opportunity to work with the four-star rated Military Warriors Support Foundation, the METALCON 25 Team and other corporate partners that have joined the team and contributed materials and services to this effort is phenomenal.

“Coming from a family with four generations of military and merchant marine service, including my husband, son and daughters, this project resonates deeply with my personal history and values. It is an opportunity for me and our team to give back to the veteran community that has been such an integral part of our lives. The chance to use our team’s expertise in barndominium design to create a space that will benefit veterans for decades is both an honor and a privilege.”

(Donate to the project, here.)

METALCON is returning to one of its most popular destinations, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, October 21-23. The trade show opens at 10 a.m. each day. The framing at METALCON and on the jobsite is from Scottsdale Construction Systems.

Before the show opens, Scottsdale Construction Systems and its partner companies will manufacture and assemble the steel-frame barndominium in the METALCON exhibit hall. Scottsdale is a world leader in next-generation roll forming technology and light-gauge steel framing by integrating design, engineering and CNC manufacturing.

“We are tremendously honored to join forces with METALCON and other friends of the industry as the founding partners of this very worthwhile endeavor serving Military Warriors Support Foundation and our veterans,” says J.R. Mujagic, chief revenue officer, Scottsdale Construction Systems. “We are also proud to showcase our end-to-end steel framing technologies in the U.S. and across the globe. This project is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when innovation and purpose come together.”

Several more generous METALCON exhibitors are participating in the construction of the project by donating building materials to be used at the show and/or the Montana site.

Steel Dynamics is contributing the exterior siding, its Tru-Steel HD digitally printed panels.

“Steel Dynamics recognizes and honors the service of United States military personnel on behalf of their country,” says Curtis Carson, Colonel, USA (Ret.) head of the Steel Dynamics Veteran Program. “Our aim is to assist veterans’ integration into the private sector economy. We are proud of being named ‘One of America’s Best Employers for Veterans’ by Forbes for the last 4 years. Steel Dynamics’ support of the Veteran Retreat Project and the Military Warrior Support Foundation is a continued reflection of our support and respect for veterans.”

“We’re proud to support this project because it aligns with our values of community, service and innovation,” says Torre Palermino, Product Leader of Self-Adhered Underlayment for Owens Corning. “This initiative provides a healing retreat for combat-wounded veterans, a cause that deeply resonates with our team. By donating our high-performance roofing underlayment, we’re not just contributing materials, we’re helping build a safe, durable and restorative space for those who’ve sacrificed so much. It’s an opportunity to use our expertise to make a lasting impact.”

Montana winters can bring plenty of snow, so S-5! Is donating a complete ColorGard 2.0 snow retention system in a color to match the metal roofing.

“Given S-5!’s long-standing commitment to charitable causes, including those supporting veterans as well as our continuous presence at METALCON as an original exhibitor since 1991, participating in this veterans’ retreat project aligns with our core values of giving back to the community,” says Rob Haddock, S-5! CEO and founder. “Eagle’s Landing will provide a space for vital healing and support for our veterans. By contributing to this project, S-5! helps create a lasting, tangible difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much.

“Our participation in the veterans’ retreat project is not just important; it’s a natural extension of who we are as a company. Giving back is important to our people. It’s our duty; it’s who we are; it’s what we stand for.”

Insulation for the veterans’ retreat is being provided by Firestable Insulation Company, which is donating its closed-cell spray foam thermal barrier insulation at Eagle’s Landing.

“At Firestable, we believe in honoring and supporting those who have selflessly served our nation,” says Jonathan Kraiger, regional sales manager. “Firestable actively hires veterans, recognizing the immense value they bring through their leadership, discipline and commitment. It is a privilege to take part in this veterans’ retreat, which aligns closely with our values and mission as a company. We are proud to stand alongside other organizations in support of this meaningful cause.”

Carlisle Architectural Metals (CAM) is donating metal roofing to the project, PAC Snap Clad panels.

“At CAM, we are honored to contribute to Eagles Landing, helping create a place where veterans’ service and sacrifice are recognized and where they can find peace, respect and support,” says Mike Weis, vice president of sales at CAM.

The Eagle’s Landing project is expected to be completed by 2026.

“I have a profound sense of pride and responsibly in contributing to this project,” says Stacee Lynn. “Knowing that our work will provide a place of respite and healing for veterans is immensely rewarding. It is a way for us to honor the sacrifices made by veterans, including those in our own family and to ensure their legacy is preserved.

“This project is not just about building a facility; it is about creating a lasting impact on the lives of those who have served their country.”

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

MCS Influencer Oliver Bell shares why metal is great for residential spaces.

The Barndominium Company focuses on metal from a residential (Barndominium) perspective. We suggest residential contractors share:

Why metal

Metal is a flexible, multi-use material that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Steel and aluminum are amongst the most recycled materials in the world making them an environmentally friendly asset.

Durability and cost effectiveness

Properly treated, sealed and maintained metal panels can last decades. Metal panel siding tends to have a lower cost for labor during installation. Once a metal panel is erected, it is generally done. Other types of sidings and finishes — stucco, brick, stone, siding etc. — typically require more labor (higher labor cost) for installation than the average metal panel.

Residential construction usage

More and more builders and homeowners are realizing that the use of metal (red iron, galvanized steel, aluminum, etc.) in residential settings for the building structure, framing and siding can actually increase the speed of the build.

Further, if designers use clear span design approaches – where the bulk of the structural load is carried on the perimeter walls – the result can be large, open spaces that create volume in a room. Clear span steel design makes steel frame homes feel much larger than the typical wood frame home of the same footprint.

Finish and design options

Color options, panel profile and surface texture finishes for metal panels continue to evolve. Clients can achieve almost any finished look they desire with the variety of metal panels on the market.
