Fuel metal sales through training opportunities and customer education.

Training may be the foundation of success in metal roofing, but contractors also need the ability to communicate value to customers. In an episode of the Roofing Road Trips® podcast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down for a conversation with Ray Kimble of Western States Metal Roofing, exploring how contractors can confidently sell metal roofing and capitalize on growing market demand.

According to Ray, education extends beyond installation techniques. He also teaches contractors how to effectively communicate the differences between traditional and metal roofing systems to decision makers. Understanding how to explain the long-term benefits of metal roofing to homeowners and building owners who may be comparing it to lower-cost alternatives is just as necessary as learning how to correctly install metal roofs

That conversation often centers on durability, energy performance and aesthetics. While metal roofing can require a higher upfront investment, Ray emphasized that contractors who understand the product are better equipped to explain its long-term value. He noted that building owners increasingly view roofing decisions through the lens of lifecycle performance rather than initial cost alone.

At the same time, demand for metal roofing continues to create opportunities for contractors looking to expand their services. Ray pointed out that many companies are stepping beyond their traditional offerings because customers are actively seeking metal solutions. “The whole reason that you're getting into it is because you know the demand is there, and people want it,” he said.

For contractors entering the market, choosing the right manufacturing partner can be just as important as learning a new roofing system. Ray stressed the importance of working with knowledgeable suppliers who can provide technical guidance, jobsite support and ongoing training. “Don't learn on the roof,” Ray advised.

That philosophy reflects the broader message of the discussion: successful metal roofing programs are built on preparation, education and strong partnerships. As interest in metal roofing continues to grow, contractors who invest in both technical expertise and customer communication will be well-positioned to capture new business while delivering better outcomes for clients.

Success starts long before crews arrive onsite.

Early collaboration may start with architects and manufacturers, but successful metal projects depend on bringing contractors into the conversation before construction begins.

In a recent MetalCast™ episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth continued her conversation with Mercedes Harris, architectural marketing manager from Western States Metal Roofing (WSMR), focusing on how coordination between architects, manufacturers and contractors helps reduce challenges later in the building process.

According to Mercedes, Western States Metal Roofing's role begins long before a project reaches the jobsite. "Our role typically begins as a technical design partner in the early specification phase," she said.

That support includes helping architects select panel profiles, reviewing design intent and providing technical resources. Mercedes explained that her team regularly shares CAD details, specifications, drawings and project manuals while discussing factors such as gauge, substrate and coating options. Sample reviews are also a significant part of the process. "Seventy-five percent of our week, we're having a sample meeting, comparing and contrasting different colors," she said.

Because the company manufactures its own products, the team can help architects understand how designs will translate from concept to construction. "We can have really detailed conversations about what's feasible, how certain profiles will perform and how details will translate from drawings to fabrication to installation," Mercedes explained.

That knowledge becomes even more valuable when contractors join the process early. Mercedes emphasized that communication among all project stakeholders helps align expectations before work begins. "Communication is key and the more that we're communicating early on in the design process, the easier it will be for everybody," she said.

Early coordination can also help minimize costly disruptions once construction starts. Mercedes noted that involving manufacturers during design allows project teams to ensure panel profiles, attachment systems and detailing are properly aligned before installation. "It really reduces improv on the field. It minimizes change orders. It helps keep the schedules on track," she said.

For Mercedes, the goal is straightforward: bring architects, manufacturers and contractors together as early as possible so projects move from design intent to finished installation with fewer obstacles and better results.

Western States Metal Roofing showcases popular architectural finishes with Corten and Charcoal Gray.

As a leading manufacturer of metal roofing materials, Western States Metal Roofing (WSMR) centers its product design and engineering to meet and anticipate consumer trends. Two standout finishes that the company highlighted in a recent newsletter are Corten ® and Charcoal Gray.

Warm and timeless: Corten

With a naturally weathered appearance, WSMR’s A606-4 Corten steel panels deliver a warm, rugged aesthetic that stands the test of time. The naturally oxidizing material is designed to develop a rust-like patina that protects the steel beneath while creating a rich, textured appearance. The finish has become increasingly popular in both modern and rustic architectural applications when designers want materials that feel organic while maintaining durability and high performance.

Corten steel panels are available in both standing seam and exposed fastener metal panels, made custom to whatever lengths needed. Designers, architects and contractors can view 3D textures of the various Corten textures, from Corrugated Corten (Western States’ most popular roofing and metal siding panel), PBR panels and Western Rib®, accessing realistic representations in seconds.

On the opposite end of the design spectrum, Charcoal Gray continues to stand out as the company’s most downloaded 3D texture. Designed with a PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) paint finish, Charcoal Gray metal roofing and siding panels offer long lasting performance in demanding environments. This finish offers a neat, classic look that complements a wide variety of colors, materials and architectural styles.

Charcoal Gray panels are available in a variety of textures, including standing seam, corrugated, Western Rib T-Groove®, Narrow Groove®, Western Wave® and more.

Western States Metal Roofing encourages early design conversations to help turn creative metal ideas into high-performing structures.

Collaboration between architects and manufacturers is reshaping the future of metal construction. In a recent MetalCast™ episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Mercedes Harris of Western State Metal Roofing (WSMR) about how early engagement with the design community is driving innovation, performance and project success across both residential and commercial markets.

One central point of collaboration takes place at the AIA Conference on Architecture and Design, where Mercedes and team connect directly with architects and specifiers. “It’s the largest conference in architecture and design that gathers thousands of architects, specifiers, designers and product manufacturers for several days of education, networking and collaboration,” Mercedes explained. “It’s where design conversations start early, often years before projects break ground.”

Rather than focusing solely on sales, Mercedes stressed the importance of cultivating long-term relationships that offer guidance and support. “It’s less about selling and more about building relationships and becoming a technical resource for the design community,” she explained. That early collaboration allows manufacturers to better understand design intent while helping architects translate concepts into practical systems.

Mercedes noted that metal is gaining traction across sectors, particularly in residential design. “We’re seeing metal used a lot more in residential to give it more of that modern, but traditional feel,” she said, pointing to WSMR’s metal panels that look like wood, which offers the appearance of natural materials with added durability.

Beyond aesthetics, performance itself remains a key driver in material selection. “Architects pay a lot of attention to fire class ratings, uplift and the climate they’re building in,” Mercedes said. Beyond appearance, she added, “A lot of architects are looking at metal for the other side of things. Is it energy efficient? Is it sustainable? How long is this going to last?”

As design trends evolve, Mercedes highlighted growing demand for vertical siding, matte finishes and textured panels that create depth and visual rhythm. With expanded color options and specialty finishes, Western States Metal Roofing is equipping architects with tools to push creative boundaries while meeting performance requirements.

Certification and education are becoming essential as metal roofing demand accelerates.

As demand for metal roofing continues to rise, contractors are increasingly looking for ways to enter or expand in the segment. In a recent Roofing Road Trips® episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Ray Kimble, general manager of Western States Metal Roofing (WSMR), about the keys to success in metal roofing.

Since 1996, Western States Metal Roofing has developed a reputation for being not only a premium metal manufacturer, but also a knowledgeable partner ready to help customers with design, development and construction.

“We want to be the one-stop-shop for anybody in metal,” Ray shared. “Whether you buy from us or not, we want to be the knowledge source, we want to help out. We want to be the people that you go to ask questions.”

In striving to be the industry leader on all things metal, WSMR has worked to fill the knowledge gaps that exist between vendors, suppliers and contractors. “It’s not that metal roofing is really hard. It’s just that it’s very precise,” Kimble explained. Unlike more forgiving systems, metal requires careful attention to several factors. “You’ve got to take into account panel layout, fastening patterns, thermal movement and substrate flatness. All of those things matter.”

That level of precision is driving demand for formal training and certification programs. As building owners become more educated, they are placing greater emphasis on who installs the system, not just the product itself. “Who installs the metal is just as important as who you buy it from,” Ray said. “Good panels can’t hide a bad installation.”

To address this need, Western States Metal Roofing has invested in contractor education, offering structured training and certification programs designed to build both technical skills and sales confidence. These programs help contractors understand not only how to install metal systems correctly, but also how to communicate their value to customers.

For contractors new to metal, mindset is often one of the biggest hurdles. Ray noted that many experienced roofers must adjust how they approach projects. “The biggest challenge is thinking differently about the system,” he said, emphasizing the importance of understanding system nuances and minimizing common issues like misalignment or oil canning.

As the market evolves, contractors who prioritize training and certification will be better positioned to compete, reduce callbacks and deliver higher-quality installations. With demand showing no signs of slowing, investing in education is quickly becoming a necessity.
