IIBEC Technical Dinner Meeting - Modeling and Validating Thermal Coatings for High-performance Envelopes

October 29, 2026 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm PST

IIBEC - oct tech dinner

Evaluating Advanced Thermal Coating Performance and Modern Energy Modelling
Presented by:  Nathan Kegel Nanotech Materials

The IIBEC SoCal Chapter invites you to learn, network, and dine at El Portal Restaurant located at 695 E Green Street, Pasadena, CA 91101. This program is designed to improve the knowledge base of consultants, contractors, and design professionals practicing in the roofing, waterproofing and building enclosure field. The seminar provides 1.0 IIBEC CEH’s and includes dinner.

This presentation explains how reflective coating, thin film insulative coating and radiant barrier finishes can lower surface temperatures, reduce heat flow through roofs, walls and ductwork, often without the added thickness, weight or disruption of convention insulation. But these mateials don't fit neatly into the steady state R value framework designers rely on. Much of their benefit comes from how they manage solar and radiant heat, which makes their performance hard to speciy, compare and defend. This session explains the science behind thermal coatings and shows how modern energy modeling fills that gap.

The objectives of the presentation are:

  1. Explain how advanced thermal coatings affect heat transfer through the building envelope that stead state r value ratings don't fully capture.
  2. Describe how physics-based hourly energy simulation models coatings can predict their effect on energy use, peak cooling loads, and occupant thermal comfort.
  3. Apply Calibration and measurement methods to confirm that coating's modeled performance matches actual building results.
  4. Evaluate thermal coatings against conventional envelope upgrades so envelope decisions hold up with code officials, certification programs and building owners.

Register today.
