In a live conversation from METALCON 2023, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with David Staller, the director of sales at S-5! where he shared insights into the evolving landscape of metal roofing, particularly around solar and snow retention solutions.  

The buzz around the booth this year gave way to the growing popularity of solar. David shared, “Solar and metal are what we call the perfect marriage because you have a product that’s going to be warranted for 30 years, sometimes even longer and you have a metal roof which is going to last 50 or more years. So, together you have a single asset that will last a lifetime.” 

Traditionally focused on metal roof installation, they are now looking at solutions to integrate solar seamlessly into their businesses. David continued, “Contractors are coming to S-5! for the solution because at the end of the day if there’s a problem with that roof, the roofers are coming to us because their customers are coming to them even though they didn’t install the solar – the roofers are left holding that leaky bag and the headaches are on them.” 

Snow retention is another challenge when it comes to properly attaching these systems to metal roofs. David showed off their Color Guard system which is a new snow bracket specifically designed to attach to insulated metal panels. David explained, “It’s an exposed fastener panel and we have a new bracket that enables an installer to attach into the insulated metal panel. It’s a sheeting only attachment and in typical S-5! fashion, everything can be engineered on our website with our snow calculator to calculate the snow load and make sure you’re installing it properly.”
