Differentiating Metal Deck Finishes

A.C.T. Differentiating Metal Deck Finishes
October 12, 2023 at 6:00 p.m.

By Anna Lockhart.

Check out this informative video detailing the importance of metal deck finishes and how to choose the right product for your project needs.

As the largest metal deck supplier in the country, A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply prides itself on being not only a primary source for products but also an educational resource for their customers. A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply has created a highly useful and informative series on YouTube detailing the basics of metal decking and highlighting key information their customers should know so they can get the best possible results on their projects using metal decking supplies.

In their video, “Finishes | Metal Deck 101,” they cover the importance of coatings applied to metal decking and the differences between types of finishes. As metal deck is a structural product, it often comes prime coated in gray or white paint, galvanized or galvanized with a factory-applied primer coat and in stainless steel.

As they point out, the Steel Deck Institute (SDI) considers a primer coat finish to be an impermanent and provisional costing, as it fades in durability over time, and because of this, buyers should consider the types of finishes that best fit their project needs before purchasing. They recommend adding field painting to metal decks where it is exposed to the elements in order to add better protection.

The video highlights the importance of such finishes in regions or locations where the atmospheric moisture levels are high or in areas where corrosive elements are a concern. In such environments, a galvanized finish is recommended, in either G60 or G90. Another option is to use stainless steel, as it is best for highly corrosive environments or in places requiring food safe surfaces.
