From officials and builders to homeowners, evidence for metal as a superior roofing choice keeps mounting

From officials and builders to homeowners, evidence for metal as a superior roofing choice keeps mounting
July 21, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.

The evidence for metal as a superior roofing material for residential homes continues to gain major traction.

Expert sources ranging from Florida Office of Insurance Regulation to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to Insurance Institute for Business and Safety (IBHS) have come forward, citing the benefits a metal roof can provide. IBHS has raised serious questions, saying that “asphalt shingles are failing American homeowners, and their durability has not advanced” (source: Palm Beach Post, part of USA Today’s Florida network). Now, some of the most recognized local home builders also are endorsing metal roofing’s advantages over asphalt shingles, especially in severe climate conditions.

Recently, home builder and YouTube influencer Matt Risinger of Build Productions based in Austin, Texas, published a video highlighting the Top 10 Reasons to Choose a Metal Roof. Matt points to the durability and longevity of metal roofs, their energy efficiency, fire resistance, low maintenance, sustainability, weight, better shedding capability, curb appeal and cost-effectiveness in the long run.

Jake Burton, a custom home builder in Kansas City and Columbia Missouri and also a content creator with Build Productions, released a video just this month about Why Builders Prefer to Use Metal Roofing. He emphasizes return on investment and reduced installation time, plus the ongoing low maintenance especially compared to asphalt shingles.

The U.S. Department of Energy has long recognized that metal roofs with advanced coatings — also known as ”cool roofs” — can reduce roof temperatures by as much as 50 degrees. Cool roofs cut energy use, curb greenhouse gas emissions and reduce heat-related illnesses and deaths. Even basic, unpainted metal roofs will reflect more solar radiation than asphalt roofs

But it’s not just the experts who are endorsing metal roofing. Homeowners themselves are realizing the materials they select will go a long way to increasing the livability and protection of their home. The Metal Roofing Alliance offers dozens of homeowner testimonials (https://metalroofing.com/why-metal-roofing/testimonials/) from people living in regions where dangers ranging from wildfires, hurricanes and hail storms are a real threat. For them, metal offers tremendous peace of mind because using less protective material simply isn’t worth the risks.

“From building and insurance experts to homeowners, the time has come to question whether the most common building materials are appropriate to use, especially in light of climate extremes and long-term sustainability,” said Renee Ramey, MRA executive director. “For so many reasons and benefits, metal roofing simply makes more sense.”

About the MRA

Representing the residential metal roofing industry in the United States and Canada, the Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) was formed to help educate consumers about the many benefits of metal roofing.
