Serious about sustainability: 5 ways AWIP’s insulated metal panels offer a planet-conscious solution

Serious about sustainability: 5 ways AWIP’s insulated metal panels offer a planet-conscious solution

Learn about AWIP’s mission to make products that accelerate a zero-emissions future.

Increasingly, contractors and building owners want high-performance roofing systems with enhanced energy efficiency. Many suppliers and manufacturing companies try to meet this demand, but not all of them assume this mission as part of their identity. One company that has made sustainability a core pillar of who they are is All Weather Insulated Panels (AWIP).

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Karen Edwards spoke with Greg Lusty, president and CEO of AWIP, about the manufacturer’s work in providing high quality products, trustworthy services and innovative solutions toward sustainability.

Greg highlighted the company’s high performance insulated metal panels (IMPs) and their part in fulfilling AWIP’s Planet Passionate commitment — their 10-year global sustainability program dedicated to producing innovative and adaptable energy-efficient building solutions to help accelerate a zero-emissions future for our planet.

1 – Material efficiency

Insulated metal panels are made with lightweight steel and insulation, reducing the overall weight and material required compared to thicker concrete or masonry walls.

“It's a lot thinner than some other different types of assemblies that might be in walls and roofs,” Greg stated. “The R-value of our product is much better than the traditional R-value of insulation that you would put on a deck system.”

2 – Energy efficiency

IMPs offer high R-values, meaning they are highly energy efficient.

“With insulated metal panels, you get a very high R-value per inch which allows you to really reduce the heating and cooling consumption associated with carbon emissions,” Greg shared.

3 – Manufacturing and supply chain efficiency

IMPs can be prefabricated and shipped to the site, reducing construction time and energy usage during transportation.

“When you have very large projects with very big scope, we prefabricate the IMPs in our factory and we supply that to the site in one component, reducing construction time and the number of trucks being delivered to a job site,” Greg explained. “Because we have three plants now, components are usually coming from fairly close to a job site, so we can reduce energy use during transportation.”

4 – Recyclability

“Steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world, and our products are made from steel,” Greg stated. “So, we use a high percentage of recycled material in our panel systems, and we even can recycle panels at end of their life as well.”

This reduces the demand for raw materials and contributes to the circular economy AWIP committed to in their Planet Passionate program.

5 – Specific product performance

AWIP offers product-specific Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) that provide detailed data on their embodied carbon content.

“We're very transparent from a sustainability standpoint. I would welcome any listener to visit our website and take a look at our EPDs and LCAs,” Greg said. “We're very serious about sustainability."
