“Steeling” the Show With Stone-coated Solutions

Westlake Steeling the Show
August 14, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

By Adam Cabrera.

In the competitive roofing industry, the choice of materials plays a significant role in both the aesthetics and durability of your project.

In a recent RLW webinar, Heidi J. Ellsworth had the opportunity to chat with Mitch Heitsch and Rob Anderson, two industry experts from Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions. They discuss stone-coated steel and how these particular products can significantly enhance insulation and air circulation, while at the same time provide a strong foundation for a resilient roofing system.

Mitch, the regional sales manager for the southeast region for Westlake Royal Roofing Solutions, pointed out the benefits of lightweight roofing materials like stone-coated steel. Mitch explains, "This product weighs 150 pounds per roofing square when it's installed. Just to give you an idea of what other materials look like, your shingle roofs range about 250 to 300 pounds per roofing square. It's really a versatile product that can go on pretty much any existing structure and perform very, very well."

Another unique design feature is the naturally occurring airflow that provides a constant cooling effect. "The product itself has airspace underneath it. And airspace is really one of the best insulators that's out there… The product itself inherently has that natural airflow which keeps the roof cooler." Mitch said. This innovative approach addresses common issues such as ice damming in colder climates and high energy bills in warmer regions.

Their product also combines an underlayment and thermal blanket in a way that minimizes temperature transmission. Rob said, "Once you put the whole system together and you're evacuating any of that either heated or cooled space to keep the ambient temperatures alive between the roof deck and the roof covering, that's where we mitigate that transmittal."

Listen to the podcast to hear more about the environmentally minded roofing products that are making a difference for the planet today.
