Labor shortages. Rising material costs. Extreme weather that drives demand higher every year. Contractors across the country are all facing the same pressures, and finding enough skilled roofers to keep up has never been harder.
If you haven’t seen it in action yet, Renovate Robotics created Rufus, an automated roofing robot designed to install asphalt shingles with speed, precision and safety. Instead of replacing human roofers, Rufus is built to work alongside crews, making jobs more efficient while reducing risk.
The roofing industry is at a tipping point:
The combination of high demand, shrinking labor and increasing costs is exactly where automation can make the biggest difference.
Rufus isn’t your typical piece of jobsite equipment. The robot uses a cable-driven system anchored to the roof’s corners. It then moves in a gantry-like pattern across the surface, placing and securing shingles with computer-guided accuracy.
Key advantages include:
Since its debut in 2023, Rufus has improved dramatically. Performance has nearly quadrupled, and the robot is now 50% faster than human installers. Renovate Robotics plans to double that speed again by the end of the year – a leap forward that you can see in action in the video below.
Renovate’s vision is to operate first as a subcontractor, completing jobs with partner roofing companies. Long term, the company will offer Rufus in a robotics-as-a-service (RaaS) model, giving contractors the ability to scale productivity without increasing crew size.
By integrating robotics into roofing:
Rufus is a glimpse into the future of construction. By starting with one of the most labor-intensive tasks in homebuilding, Renovate Robotics is laying the groundwork for a broader wave of construction automation.
