The term bias can be defined as prejudice; an inclination or preference, especially one that interferes with impartial judgment (Sleeper Group, n.d.). While we may be familiar with the term conscious bias, unconscious bias can be a more challenging concept. We know that bias in the workplace has substantial impacts. – How can we increase our awareness and best address it?

Ensuring a diverse, welcoming, and productive organization means overcoming biases. No matter who you are, you are prey to unconscious biases. To be part of a complex, diverse workplace, you must take steps to overcome them. The session will address how attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviors affect the equity and inclusion of one group in a positive way and another group in a negative way. We all have biases. Strategies and tools to minimize the impact of bias in the workplace will be provided. Additionally, you’ll learn to recognize how superficial differences can contribute to bias and lead to prejudice and social stereotypes, as well as specific tactics for combatting unconscious bias and adopting an anti-bias approach.

Join speakers, Dani Wolland and Divya Ramoo on Wednesday, November 1, 1:00–2:30 PM ET.

At the end of this course, learners will be better able to:

  • Discuss the impacts of unconscious bias on the workplace.
  • Explain how attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviors affect equity.
  • Identify approaches and tools that minimize the impact of bias.
  • Recognize the effects of bias on workplace inclusivity
