Balancing AI efficiency with human transparency

Balancing AI efficiency with human transparency
February 27, 2025 at 12:00 p.m.

MCS Influencer Robert Tiffin says contractors can use AI to improve efficiency, but must work to keep things fair and transparent.

Using artificial intelligence (AI) in construction can make things run more smoothly, but it's important to do it in a way that's fair and keeps people in the loop. Here are some tips for contractors:

  • Create ethical rules: Make clear rules about fairness, transparency, accountability and privacy. These rules will guide how you use AI responsibly.
  • Use fair data: Make sure the data you use to train AI is unbiased and includes diverse perspectives. Regularly check for biases and use techniques to reduce unfair outcomes.
  • Check for biases: Regularly audit AI algorithms to find and fix biases. This helps ensure the AI is fair and accountable.
  • Keep humans involved: Always have humans oversee AI processes, especially for important decisions. This helps maintain trust and ethical standards.
  • Include diverse voices: Build teams with people from different backgrounds to spot biases and improve fairness in AI systems.
  • Protect data: Use strong security measures to protect sensitive information and follow data privacy laws. This helps prevent data breaches and cyberattacks.

By following these steps, contractors can use AI to improve efficiency while keeping things fair and transparent. And yes, I used MS Co-Pilot for assistance writing this, as it only seemed only “fair” to see and read what AI wanted to add. In the video, I break down how I did this with an emphasis on the HUMAN part of the interaction with AI.

Robert Tiffin is the president of the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association. Read his full bio here.
