Closing the skills gap in metal building assembly

Closing the skills gap in metal building assembly

Invest in the future of metal buildings with a new approach to training, recruitment and retention.

A skilled labor shortage continues to challenge the metal building sector. Inconsistent craft skills, a lack of standardized techniques and the absence of a national database for trained workers have made recruiting and retaining talent harder than ever. These gaps threaten to waste time and money while also threatening building quality and the reputation of our industry.

Recognizing these urgent issues, the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), along with the Metal Buildings Institute (MBI) and the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), has launched an important initiative: the Metal Building System Assembly Training Program.

This program is designed to offer affordable, consistent training that speaks to how today’s workforce learns – using interactive online modules combined with hands-on practice in either the classroom or the field. Available in both English and Spanish, the training will emphasize safety, building integrity and the technical skills needed to meet the challenges within metal building assembly.

The goal isn’t just to provide education. It’s to professionalize the craft, create a clear pathway for new workers to enter our industry and equip companies with the tools to recruit, develop and retain talent. The program even aims to meet the standards of a formal apprenticeship, addressing both immediate labor needs and long-term industry growth.

By investing in standardized training, we can ensure safer job sites, higher-quality construction and a stronger reputation for metal building erectors.

While fundraising for the program is underway – with major contributions already pledged by industry leaders like BlueScope, S-5!® and the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) – one of the best ways to support this effort is by getting involved with MBCEA. Becoming a member connects you to industry education, resources and a community with similar goals in mind.

We can strengthen our workforce one skilled craft professional at a time – become a member of the MBCEA or pledge your support today.
