How innovation and tech are shaping the next generation of metal construction.

In this episode of MetalCast™, recorded live at METALCON 2024 in Atlanta, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Bobby Mesmer, CEO of RMG Erectors & Constructors, for a revealing and forward-looking conversation that pushes past the basics of metal construction. While much of the industry buzz centers around the rise of residential metal buildings, the episode’s final stretch dives deep into areas less discussed, such as technology adoption, international expansion and workforce transformation.

Bobby shared how RMG is adapting to gaps in technology by creating internal solutions where the market has fallen short. “There isn’t a program out there to properly help with erection needs,” he said. Rather than settle, his team uses advanced Excel automations tailored to field needs, proving that innovation doesn’t always require a flashy app. Field tech isn’t overlooked, either. From iPad plan delivery to battery-operated drills with industrial grade torques, Bobby sees utilizing their gear as a strategic advantage. He pointed to the demanding life cycle of their tools as a reason RMG works closely with trusted brands, noting that companies like Milwaukee have earned their loyalty by consistently delivering quality and reliability.

Perhaps the most eye-opening segment came with a look at material innovation. Bobby is energized by the possibilities: “The whole printing on metal now… it’s amazing. You can’t even tell until you walk up on it and touch it.” From wood-grain coatings to graffiti-resistant panels, these new finishes are blurring the line between utility and aesthetics. It’s a shift that not only expands design options but also redefines what builders and clients can expect from metal as a modern, versatile material.

The conversation closed with a candid reflection on the skilled labor crisis and a call to rethink how construction is presented to younger generations. “Everybody wants to talk to kids once they're already in college,” Bobby shared. “We stopped talking to kids in high school.” His solution? Reach earlier, offer real opportunity and restore pride in the trades from a young age.
