Government agencies across the United States continue turning to metal building systems for facilities that demand durability, efficiency and long-term value. In its “Government Facilities” case study, the Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) highlights how metal buildings are helping municipalities, public agencies and community organizations create resilient spaces while managing budgets and sustainability goals.
The case study demonstrates how metal building systems support a wide range of government applications, including fire stations, recreation centers, recycling facilities, research buildings and public works complexes. According to MBMA, the appeal comes from a combination of speed, cost-efficiency, design flexibility and environmental performance.
Metal building systems also help agencies address modern construction priorities such as energy efficiency, recyclability and reduced environmental impact. Features like recycled steel content, low-VOC materials and optimized design strategies contribute to sustainable construction while supporting long building life cycles and lower maintenance demands.
One featured project, the Bentonville Community Center in Bentonville, Arkansas, showcases how metal building systems can create large-scale community spaces that balance aesthetics and performance. The approximately 80,000-square-foot facility includes pools, fitness areas, community rooms and recreation spaces designed to serve residents of all ages. The project also earned a Facility of the Year award from the Arkansas Recreation and Parks Association.
In Xenia, Ohio, the Greene County Parks & Trails Building demonstrates the efficiency advantages of metal construction. By using a cooperative purchasing approach and a metal building system, project teams reduced administrative time, accelerated the schedule and achieved approximately $1 million in savings while expanding the facility’s footprint.
The case study also highlights the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department Station #152 in Castle Rock, Colorado. The fire station incorporates energy-efficient design principles, specialized ventilation systems and durable metal construction to support emergency response operations while improving firefighter safety.
Additional projects featured in the study include airport terminals, justice centers, recycling facilities, research laboratories and expo centers throughout the country, reinforcing the versatility of metal building systems for public-sector construction.
