Sealant performance starts with the right product choice

Understanding roof materials and penetration components is critical for achieving durable results.

In this episode of MetalCast™, Megan Ellsworth spoke with Jeff Hung from Geocel about what contractors should consider when selecting sealants for challenging environments. Jeff emphasized that proper product choice starts with understanding site conditions and material compatibility, especially when working in cold or wet weather.

“For us, the main thing we always point out is it does not matter what product you are using. The questions we ask typically are, where are you using it and what do you need it to do?” Jeff said. He explained that Geocel offers a wide range of sealants, many with overlapping uses, but choosing the right one depends on details such as the roof system, surrounding materials and environmental demands.

Jeff encouraged contractors to reach out when unsure which product fits their project. “If you do not know, check our website, contact our customer service or reach out to our regional rep team,” he said. “We are here to help. We can provide that type of instruction and confidence.”

When sealing penetrations on roofs with solar panels, flashings or mechanical equipment, Jeff noted that identifying every material the sealant will contact is essential. “You need details: knowing what you are going to be adhering to, what you are trying to fix and then matching it to the proper sealant or repair product that works with it,” he said.

Jeff also highlighted Geocel’s 4350™ hybrid construction sealant as a versatile solution for indoor and outdoor commercial roofing applications. “The technology allows it to be compatible with all types of substrates and surfaces,” he said. He added that the hybrid formulation is UV resistant, long lasting and able to stretch without cracking. Its durability is so dependable that it has become a running joke among contractors. Jeff shared, “We always joke, ‘Hey, if your roof is blown off, Geocel is probably holding that penetration onto that roof still down the street.'"
