The Benefits of a Metal-over-metal Retrofit System

MBCI Roof Hugger System
March 13, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Alec Doniger.

Metal-over-metal might be the most convenient, cost-effective method for re-roofing your property.

In the U.S., metal roofs continue to increase in demand. Metal is a long-lasting, durable and reliable material. Despite all this, there are still billions of square feet of metal roofing approaching the end of its service life. Instead of tearing off an existing roof and replacing it with a new one, there are several advantages to a metal-over-metal retrofit. Installing a metal panel system over an existing one could dramatically improve the roofing situation, save time and be less intrusive for the building residents.

MBCI’s Roof Hugger® metal-over-metal systems are environmentally friendly. The added metal layer installed above the original roof allows for maximum insulation, which helps dramatically lower energy usage and cost. This extra space also allows for implementation of solar thermal technology. This is the greenest way to heat the building interior, as well as its water.

Since a metal-over-metal system allows the original roof to stay on, the installation process is easy for both contractors and building inhabitants. Residents can continue living inside while the new roof is being installed, and the roofers themselves can begin installing the new roof without the hassle of removing the old roof.

Roof durability is improved drastically with MBCI’s Roof Hugger systems. Since these roofs come with additional brace points, the purlin load capacity of the building is increased. This helps the roof meet current uplift pressure standards, which can be higher than they were when the original roof was installed.

The durability, sustainability and reliability of metal-over-metal retrofit systems can hardly be contested.
