The path to growth and prosperity in metal

MCS Influencer Travis Sliger says we need to be more vocal about what sets this industry apart.

One way I believe the metal industry can better recruit and train the next generation is by focusing on the lifestyle opportunities this trade offers. Metal roofing, in particular, is the fastest-growing roofing material in residential construction and, in my honest opinion, has the highest long-term upside. I think it’s important to help young people see how they can grow with an industry that’s not just sustainable but also on the rise.

In my opinion, partnering with local high school career academies could make a big impact. By introducing students to metalworking early—through hands-on training, guest speakers or facility tours—we can help them understand that this isn’t just a job, it’s a rewarding career. When young people realize this trade can lead to financial security, stability and pride in their work, I believe they’ll start to see its potential.

Another idea is to meet young people where they are: online. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube offer great opportunities to tell the story of what life in the metal industry looks like. For example, short, engaging videos can showcase a “day in the life” of a metalworker, highlight the culture of our companies or share the success stories of individuals who’ve built their futures in this trade. This content could make the industry feel more relatable and exciting.

I also feel we need to be more vocal about what sets this industry apart. Trades like metal roofing offer not just jobs but a pathway to achieving personal goals like homeownership, starting a family and financial independence—goals that many young adults feel are slipping out of reach. By focusing on the opportunities and lifestyle this trade can provide, I believe we’ll attract more interest.

Ultimately, I think the key is to inspire rather than just inform. If we can show the next generation the growth potential and life-changing opportunities in metal roofing, I believe we’ll build a stronger workforce to take this industry into the future.
