The revolution of pre-engineered metal

MetalCast The revolution of pre-engineered metal
July 24, 2024 at 8:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Get insights from a metal industry expert on how the erector industry has grown and changed over the years.

Contractors looking for a sustainable, durable and valuable building material option are increasingly turning to metal. Because of these benefits and more, the metal industry continues to see tremendous growth. In this MetalCast episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth hosts Bobby Mesmer of RMG Erectors and Constructors to talk about the metal erector industry today.

Bobby is the CEO of RMG, who is the world’s largest pre-engineered steel building erector. They have been in the business for over two decades and, as Bobby put it, “We've set the tone in the metal building erection industry across the United States. We have doubled our revenues and our total square footage erected year over year for the last three years in a row consistently, where we are erecting on average about 4 million square feet more than any other erector in the entire country.”

With this unique and strong positioning, Bobby has been able to watch as the industry has grown and changed over the years. He highlighted that there are new engineering techniques that allow businesses to create unique and customized pre-engineered building designs. Bobby explained, “If you talk to some old timers about pre-engineered, they talk about it as its traditional box. Now, engineering techniques are allowing the market of pre-engineered to expand into so many other markets.” These design and engineering techniques have resulted in RMG’s buildings having better thermal ratings than conventional wood construction.

Beyond just the physical construction advancements, Bobby has seen an entire shift in how the industry is seen and interacted with. He elaborated, “There's a lot of involvement in educating the outside world, the developers, the end users, the architects, the engineers into the product to give them a more thorough understanding.” By dedicating time and energy to this information sharing, Bobby and other industry members are able to create solutions for individual clients' needs and save them both time and money.
