Hi, I'm Robert Tiffin, and thanks to the MetalCoffeeShop® for letting me share a moment with you. A culture of safety happens when it's not a box to check; it becomes part of who you are. When safety is tied to identity, personal ownership follows naturally. People make the right call because it's their call. That's why recognition programs through industry safety matters: not for the plaques, but for what they represent, the everyday decisions when no one is watching.
Promote those open conversations around near misses. Recognize safe choices with the same enthusiasm as production wins. And empower anyone to stop work and say something if they see something or if it just doesn't feel right. That level of trust is where true ownership lives. At the end of the day, safety is not a rulebook. It's a shared responsibility carried at every job, every shift and every decision.
Go out there, be safe and be the good.
Robert Tiffin is the president of the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association. Read his full bio here.
