Tru-Steel HD®
Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company, with facilities located throughout the United States, and in Mexico. The company operates using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality products with recycled scrap as the primary input. Steel Dynamics is one of the largest domestic steel producers and metal recyclers in North America, combined with a meaningful downstream steel fabrication platform. The company is also currently investing in aluminum operations to further diversify its product offerings, with plans to supply aluminum flat rolled products with high recycled content to the countercyclical sustainable beverage can industry, in addition to the automotive and industrial sectors. Steel Dynamics is committed to operating with the highest integrity and to being the safest, most efficient producer of high-quality, broadly diversified, value-added metal products.
Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
Realistic wood and material looks
Tru-Steel HD® uses a large-format HD digital printer to transfer high-resolution images of real wood, stone, designer metals and more onto steel.
- Ultra-HD Printing: Our advanced digital printer can print at up to 400 dpi resolution. For reference, most professional wedding photos are printed at 300 dpi. That’s a ~33% increase in quality.
- Authentic Appearance: The Tru-Steel HD® design team meticulously images real wood, stone, metals, and more to create a hyper-realistic source for our prints.
- Millions of Colors: With millions of ink color combinations available, Tru-Steel HD® prints capture the intricate tones and hues of the source materials.
- Up to 32-Foot Repeat: Most competitors repeat an entire pattern every 3-4 feet. Our standard images run up to 32 feet in length, allowing for details such as woodgrain knots, stone chips and cracks and copper mottling with a seamless repeat.
The product can go well beyond a basic siding application. Tru-Steel HD showcases everything from barns, barndominiums and agricultural buildings to offices, cottages, RV garages, commercial projects and interior feature walls. That makes the design story especially strong: contractors and designers can use wood, stone or specialty-metal appearances as the primary exterior finish or as accents alongside conventional steel.
Steel performance with a seven-layer system

The product isn't simply an image printed onto bare metal. Tru-Steel HD® uses a seven-layer construction that includes the steel base, galvanized or Galvalume coating, pretreatment, primer, topcoat, HD image and a solvent-free UV-protective clearcoat. The system is designed to protect the printed finish while providing the durability of steel, and the product carries a Class A fire rating.
Tru-Steel HD® starts with a single layer of steel and adds six coating and print layers. The steel is melted and rolled at Steel Dynamics, and every coating, image and clear coat is applied on our own production lines.
We control production from start to finish, delivering a high-quality, sustainable product.

Sustainability and responsible steel production
Steel Dynamics is proud to operate some of the most environmentally friendly steel mills in the entire world. We use low-carbon-emissions Electric Arc Furnace technology at our steel-producing facilities and follow a Circular Manufacturing Method, sourcing raw materials from our own scrap operations.
When our steel products reach the end of their lifecycle, they are scrapped, recycled and melted into new steel, completing a full circle. This combination of modern steelmaking technology and supply-chain efficiency enables us to achieve industry-low Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
- Metals Recycling: This scrap metal is sorted and recycled at our sister company, Omni®.
- Metal Production: We melt scrap into new steel at our three sustainable mill operations, all based in the USA.
- Metal Manufacturing: Our fabrication company, New Millennium, manufactures steel joists and deck for direct sales to job sites.
- Metal Customers: We sell steel coil products directly to thousands of customers across North America, who process them into finished goods.
- Scrap Collection: We collect scrap metal from our customers and the general public.
