Building a better roof: Inside the metal roofing revolution

Sherwin-Williams - Building a better roof: Inside the metal roofing revolution

Roofing Passport simplifies metal roofing, empowering contractors to sell with ease.

Recently we sat down with Sherwin-Williams representatives Brendan McGinnis and Junny Lee to learn more about Roofing Passport, which is poised to disrupt the residential re-roofing market. More than just a tool, the platform is part of Sherwin-Williams’ broader MetalVue initiative, a program designed to empower contractors and manufacturers in an industry historically dominated by asphalt shingles.

Brendan explains that they are not just selling a product but providing support and education. With a background in chemistry, he now manages the OEM program for the Sherwin-Williams MetalVue initiative. “Roofing Passport really brings speed; it brings the opportunity to sell early and that's what makes it the heartbeat of the MetalVue program,” Brendan shared.

The platform boasts three methods for data input: satellite imaging via EagleView, blueprint uploads and existing XML file integration via Roofing WRX. Once processed, contractors receive a comprehensive material takeoff and a preliminary quote — features that eliminate the traditionally slow, manual processes associated with metal roofing estimates. “You can get a ballpark idea of what you're going to need on that roof without ever leaving your desk,” Brendan noted.

Junny, a segment manager with a decade of experience at Sherwin-Williams, noted the software’s sustainability advantages. According to Junny, metal roofing is not only durable but aligns with green building principles — recyclability, solar reflectivity and energy savings. Roofing Passport helps contractors emphasize these benefits to homeowners.

The upcoming updates to Roofing Passport focus heavily on user experience. “It's really all about the voice of the customer, right? Understanding what their needs are, where our shortcomings have been, areas that we can improve on — and the biggest one has been the UI and the UX,” Junny revealed. These enhancements aim to reduce the user’s learning curve and improve adoption rates, crucial for small-to-mid-sized contractors.

Sherwin-Williams sees Roofing Passport as more than a software; it’s a game-changer in an industry traditionally hesitant to adopt metal roofing. With Brendan and Junny’s passionate leadership, the platform is shaping a future where metal roofing is as accessible and standard as any other material on the market.
