Occasionally, metal panels with a paint coat will chip or fade with time or damage. Check out this guide for easy tips and tricks for touching-up painted panels!

Metal roofing is a great and durable option for those wanting a roof that will last a long time and withstand harsh weather. However, that’s not to say that the occasional chip to a paint job won’t happen. When it does, it is an easy fix! Use this guide from the experts at RPS Metal Roofing to show you their best tricks and tips for fixing minor damages!

Prepare the damaged area

The first step in touch-up is to prepare the surface of the metal roof or siding panel by wiping down the area with a damp cloth, removing dirt and debris from the touch-up zone. Metal panels can be sprayed directly with aerosol spray cans or use a brush for pre-mixed touch-up paint. If you choose the aerosol route, apply several thin coats rather than one thick one; this will help avoid runs and drips on vertical surfaces. Aim for an overlapping “S” pattern when spraying and keep each passing light so as not to put too much paint in one spot. When using pre-mixed touch-up paint, stir before applying it with a brush. The touch-up paint should be the same color as the existing roof or siding panel for good results.

Apply primer and paint

Once you have prepped the surface for touch-up, apply a coat of primer to help ensure even coverage of the touch-up paint. After letting the primer dry completely, apply two coats of touch-up paint in thin passes over your working zone. It’s important to wait at least 30 minutes between each layer to dry completely without the solvent evaporating too quickly. Make sure to keep overlapping lines smooth, so they blend into one another naturally.

Clean up and final touches

After applying touch-up paint, let it dry completely before giving the metal panel a final inspection. If touch-ups are necessary, use an aerosol touch-up spray or pre-mixed touch-up paint and a brush to apply additional coats until the area is fully covered and looks natural again. Once touch-ups have been completed, allow them to cure for 24 hours, and then do a light cleaning with warm soapy water to remove any residue from overspray. Touching up paint on metal panels is relatively simple if you follow some basic steps. Prep the surface, apply primer and touch-up paint in thin coats and then allow it to dry completely before doing light touch-ups. Clean up any overspray with warm soapy water and let touch-ups cure for 24 hours before finalizing the project. Following these simple steps will help ensure an even touch-up job that looks professional.

If you’re not up for the task or don’t feel confident in your ability, it might be time to call in the pros. RPS Metal Roofing can refer you to a trust licensed contractor that can touch up paint on metal panels quickly and professionally, so you don’t have to worry about any mistakes or overspray.
