Editor's note: The following is the transcript of a live interview with MCS Influencers Robert Tiffin and Mike Smith of Silvercote. You can read the interview below, listen to the podcast or watch the recording.
Alex Tolle: Hello, I'm Alex Tolle with MetalCoffeeShop.com and I am back for another influencer response. Today I am joined by Silvercote's Robert Tiffin. So our question this month is: what roles do metal building solutions play in improving energy efficiency, and how can contractors highlight this benefit to their clients?
Robert Tiffin: Well, it's a great question and to best give a well-rounded answer and a technical answer rather than just a sales guy, I've invited our technical product manager, Mike Smith, to help answer the question. So would you mind asking him?
Alex Tolle: Yes, Mike. So what roles do metal building solutions play in improving energy efficiency?
Mike Smith: I mean, metal buildings are inherently very energy efficient, or can be. Being made out of metal, they're already made of a renewable resource. So as far as life cycle is concerned, that's a very good thing about them. But as far as the multiple different installation packages and procedures that are available out in the industry for metal buildings, there's not an energy code that can't be met. And that's not just in the United States, that's in Canada. We do business also in other countries where the materials that we use are code-compliant with metal building structures.
Alex Tolle: Amazing.
Robert Tiffin: So to answer the "What can contractors do?" Alex — by knowing that, with the stringent energy codes going on in the US and in Canada, that a metal building system can achieve that, right? The key there is a good partnership with their insulation solutions provider to maximize the opportunity to get the return. But as we all know, to get the sign-off of the local official. So being a contractor and keeping up with your education of what's available, albeit mass fiberglass, laminated fiberglass, IMPs or boards. Keeping up with today's available products is the key that a contractor should follow.
Alex Tolle: Absolutely. Well, Robert, Mike, thank you both so much for your expertise this month and we'll see you guys on the next one.
Robert Tiffin: Perfect. Thanks, Alex.
Mike Smith: Alright, take care.
Robert Tiffin is the president of the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association. Read his full bio here.
