Roofing isn’t just loud construction sites and hard hats. It’s also the quiet, behind-the-scenes efforts to move homeowner minds and market trends.
Since its inception in 1998, Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) has been leading this deliberate charge to make metal the center of the residential roofing industry. As a non-profit trade association, MRA is dedicated to helping homeowners make educated roofing decisions and connecting them with expert metal roofing professionals.
One way that MRA has helped transform the industry is through the yearly custom market research report they started the year of their founding in 1998. The reports show significant growth of metal roofing in the residential sphere, thanks, in part, to their education and advocacy work.
“While we won't claim 100% of the results of that study,” Renee Ramey, executive director of MRA, shared in a MetalCast episode, “we certainly believe our efforts have helped grow what was about a 3% market share for metal roofing in the re-roof market up to north of 17%.”
These numbers are only projected to keep climbing. According to MRA’s 2024 report, “Metal roofing is anticipated to reach over 4.8 billion square feet in 2028 based on historical and forecasted shipments (square footage). These forecasts also point to a 19 percent increase in growth for residential metal roofing from 2024 to 2028.”
The study also found that standing seam ranked among the most popular choices, with metal roofing shingles and through fastened roofs also capturing a portion of the market. Newer technologies and styles, like stone-coated metal roofing, were also noted to gain traction.
“We truly believe that metal roofing, quality metal roofing, sells itself,” Renee stated. “So, we offer homeowners a way to find a local MRA installer and get them started down that path of replacing the roof with quality metal as smoothly as possible.”
