In the heart of historic Charleston, South Carolina, innovation, education and environmental stewardship come together in a striking new facility at the South Carolina Aquarium. The recently completed Boeing Learning Lab at the Charleston Maritime Center is an 8,500 square-foot classroom space that invites students from across the state to engage with marine science in a hands-on setting.
Designed by John Ciccarelli Architect and constructed by Trident Construction, the project features the patented RS100 rainscreen system from American Metalcraft. Engineered, fabricated and finished by the American Metalcraft team, the RS100 brings both visual impact and high-performance protection to this coastal setting. Its sleek, modern aesthetic complements the harbor front while providing the durability needed to withstand Charleston’s humid climate and salt-laden air. With support from Charleston Building Contractors, the rainscreen panels were customized to meet both the performance standards and visual goals set forth by the project team.
The Learning Lab is an intentional, therapeutic space designed for future scientists and environmentalists to have a visual connection to the water. Located a short walk from the main aquarium, the building houses four indoor classrooms, an open-air teaching area, a broadcast studio and aquarium staff offices. Here, students participating in programs like the Dominion Energy School Programs, the Teen Conservation Crew and the High School Intern Program will engage in immersive learning experiences. They’ll analyze harbor water samples, study coastal ecosystems and explore sustainability topics along Charleston’s waterfront.
American Metalcraft, a certified Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE), takes pride in supporting projects that empower future generations through sustainability and education. With its blend of cutting-edge cladding, inspiring views and educational impact, the Boeing Learning Lab is an example of how thoughtful design can support educational experience.
