The cool solution for lower energy bills

MCSI - July - Renee Ramey
July 31, 2025 at 8:30 a.m.

MCS Influencer Renee Ramey says people who put an energy efficient metal roof on their home are going to see drops in their heating and cooling costs.

Editor's note: The following is the transcript of a live interview with MCS Influencer Renee Ramey. You can read the interview below, listen to the podcast or watch the recording.

Alex Tolle: Hello, I'm Alex Tolle with MetalCoffeeShop.com and I am here with Renee for our July influencer topic. So our July question is what roles do metal building solutions play in improving energy efficiency and how can contractors highlight this benefit to their clients?

Renee Ramey: Okay, well, as I am part of the Metal Roofing Alliance, I can speak to what a roof will do, a metal roof will do for a homeowner. From that perspective, there's so many benefits I'm not quite sure where to begin, but we'll go with the energy cost savings that one might experience. Most people who put an energy efficient metal roof or a cool roof on their home are going to see drops in their heating and cooling costs significant compared to other roofing materials.

Then if you move beyond that, metal roofing is the perfect platform for solar panels, especially on the residential arena, but also commercial, industrial, et cetera. But yeah, there are so many various accessories, clamps, et cetera, that allow solar panels to be installed on metal roofing without penetrating the roof. That's something unique to metal roofing and that's something that just helps guarantee that water tightness of the roof. No penetrations means ... or fewer penetrations means fewer potential leaks or things of that issue.

Then the other side of that is that a metal roof will outlast most solar panels that are out there just from a warranty longevity perspective. So, you're not putting solar panels on your roof on asphalt and then having to take the system off in order to replace asphalt roof and then putting it back on. So, those are two of the big energy-related benefits of metal in building construction.

Alex Tolle: Yeah, absolutely. That's so important to the homeowner for long-term cost of saving on their energy bill. There's just so many options with metal roofing, like you said, with the solar panels and just all the different attachments and things that make your roof unique.

Renee Ramey: Yes.

Alex Tolle: All right, well, thank you so much, Renee. We appreciate you always giving your feedback.

Renee Ramey: Happy to help.
