The roofing and construction industries continue to be very competitive spaces where differentiating yourself from your competition is the key to success. While at the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association’s 2025 conference, Heidi J. Ellsworth got the chance to host a MetalCast featuring Joe Paparella about how All Weather Insulated Panels’ (AWIP) installer program can help contractors sharpen their skills, boost their credibility and stand out from the crowd.
Joe, who is AWIP’s vice president of sales and marketing, started by sharing a bit about the rise of IMPs (insulated metal panels) in the construction industry. He explained, “IMPs as a whole have grown tremendously over the last decade. In a traditional install 20 years ago, you would have a single skin manufactured roof. Then, you'd have to go install that insulation and come back through and put that layer of metal on top. An insulated metal panel puts that into a one pass install.” This makes the entire installation process more efficient and saves both the contractors and the building owners money in labor hours.
But, with every new development in construction products, there is a learning curve to working with IMPs. That’s why AWIP has created their IMPpro installer program! Joe shared about the program, saying, “Attending these programs, there's going to be a few different components that you're going to see. We start with a plant tour, just to understand the basics of how a panel is going to be made. Just knowing that as you're planning that job site, you'll be able to take that experience away and use that going forward.” After the tour, program attendees head into the classroom. This covers some of the logistical details, like what products are available, what tools should be used, etc. From there, you move into the hands-on portion. Joe explained, “In the hands-on install, we cover our wall panels first, then we're going to put our roof panels on and then after that, for a full day session, we're going to have one deck as well, which is our low-slope roofing application.”
Overall, this program is a perfect opportunity for installers, owners, architects and anyone else interacting with IMPs to sharpen their skills and knowledge. And completing it and getting the title of IMPpro can be a great sales point for contractors. Joe explained, “No one wants someone putting a roof on that's never put a roof on before. With this program, you can come in, train up your staff so you have a well-rounded team that's ready and show clients that you have done that work.”
