Finding Success With Association Memberships

I wanted to answer why you should first belong to a trade association supporting the metal construction industry. Trade associations provide valuable information like professional development, market analyses and substantial resources to assist you in operating your business professionally and efficiently. Trade organizations can also help you gain access to the newest technology and equipment. Membership in a trade association usually requires an annual membership fee. If you participate in the local or national chapters, you can quickly recoup your membership cost and much more.  

Some specific reasons you should join your trade associations are: 

• Access and guidance to industry-specific regulatory issues 
• Educational opportunities  
• Learn about industry best practices  

Below are some of the associations dedicated to the metal construction industry: 

• Metal Construction Association (MCA): MCA is a national trade association that represents manufacturers and suppliers of metal building systems, metal roofing, wall panels, and related components. MCA provides resources, education, and advocacy for its members and promotes the use of metal in construction through research, codes and standards development. 
• Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA): MBCEA is a national trade association representing metal building system contractors and erectors. MBCEA provides its members with education, resources and networking opportunities and promotes using metal buildings as a sustainable and cost-effective construction option. 
• The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA): MRA is for companies and professionals in the residential metal roofing industry. The MRA is dedicated to helping homeowners make educated roofing decisions and connecting them with expert metal roofing professionals. 

Three other national organizations also have local affiliate chapters, though not solely dedicated to the metal construction industry, that you should also look to for industry knowledge and growth: 

• International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) 
• National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) 
• National Women in Roofing (NWiR) 

Let's look at a few benefits of participating in associations for your professional and personal growth. Associations offer excellent networking opportunities. They are a place to exchange ideas between members with different strengths and perspectives. They provide education and research you can access that will improve your skills and exposure to new approaches, technologies and marketing strategies. Attending professional conferences and expos introduces you to new business connections and increases the number of people you can call on for advice. It allows you to share your wisdom with others through exchanging ideas.  

One of the best benefits I have enjoyed throughout my career in trade associations is that they are also fun. Spending time with others with common goals will develop lifelong friendships, which deepen your connection to and investment in your business.
